I bought a used Netgear wireless router on E-bay. I got it and tried to use it , my laptop sees it and says it has a good reception. However when I try to use it it asks for a "network key". I thought this might be a passwork or something. I got no manual with it. I went to their web site and downlaoded the manual and can't really make it out. I took it apart thinking there was a CMOS battery or jumper or something I could reset. Nothing inside. Anybody with sugestions? Bobwrench |

Open a browser window. Type in http://192.168.0.1 When the password box opens, try admin for the user and password for the password ( this is the default stuff hopefully it has not been changed, if so check the netgear website for the reset procedure ) on the right side you will see advanced and WAP ( I think ) check for a code there and put that in to your laptop config. |
Nope. could not connect. I get the "Page cannot be displayed" ........... |
You did try this on the computer the router is connected to right? you also have to be connected to the net. |

Depending on how old it is it might not have a reset switch on it. Your best bet is to call the previous owner and kindly ask for the password. This is what i had to do if i or customer forgot password link not fun let me tell you what is the model number by the way |
At the "default gateway" it is blank. At the little icon for my wireless connection in the lower right corner it say signal strenghth is excellent Status is connected. Speed 54.0 Mbps. Sent 164. Received 0 |
Yep, on both counts |

If the router has a WEP or WPA key installed, he will not be able to connect via a wireless connection. Use a Cat5 cable and hardwire the router to the laptop. Use a std cable and plug into one of the 4 out ports on the router. Do not use the Internet port. Net access is not required. Then access the admin page at http://192.168.0.1 User name: admin Password: blank If the password is incorrect, reset the router by pushing in the little reset button. Note that all the above is written on the bottom of the router - with pictures. Fritz |

neat thread, I just got one of the same model in today. I bought it off of newegg for $50 and I'm going to send out the $20 mail in rebate tomorrow. My girlfriend came in today and we messed with the wireless and her notebook among other things. I'm still needing to look up how to do alot of this security stuff on it. |
That worked. I never thought of connecting with a Cat 5 cable. Works fine. Not bad for $9.00 and $6.00 shipping. I got it on E-bay Thanks to all with suggestions. I knew someone would know the answer. I always look at Arfcom for advice. Bobwrench |
