I've wanted a DSLR for quite the past couple of years it just hasn't been high on my want list. So when I was asked what I wanted for my birthday I said a Nikon D3100.
What I got was a coolpix P7100. Totally different camera. Seems to be a very well built camera with a lot features but not a DSLR

So my question is should I exchange it or keep it?

The type of photos I want to take are hiking nature, firearms, and life photos
Thanks

It's a decent compact camera.  Among the top in that class.  But it's no DSLR.

Ultimately it is up to you to see if you are satisfied with it (assuming you can open the box and return it with no penalty).  If you cannot try it out first, then I would return it and get what you originally wanted.

Thanks! It was ordered from B and H so I think there shouldn't be a problem exchanging it.
It's nice camera but I would rather have the DSLR.

I would check out some of the other Nikons besides the 3100, its getting a little dated. They've released the 3200.

I would check out the 5200 too. Typically the higher in the chain you go, the user controls get a lot better and you really need to be shooting in a user controlled mode to get the most out of a DSLR.
