I am trying to do some work from home and when I try to remotely log in I get this crap.

Your computer has reported the following information;

Anti-Virus Status
Software Installed: 'Windows Defender';
Software Version: '6.1.7600.16385';
Engine Version: '1.1.8904.0';
Def Version: '1.139.936.0';
Def Date: 'Mon Oct 29 19:03:44 CDT 2012';
RealTime Protection: 'Disabled';

Firewall Status
Software Installed: 'Symantec Endpoint Protection';
Software Version: '12.1.1101.401';

It won't let me in if I don't have the approved anti-virus software installed, which I do, but it keeps showing I have windows defender when it should be symantec.

How do I do this? It seems like you can't do it without jacking your stuff up.

Your woRk computer has symantic  and your home pc has defender.  Your work pc doest think defender is good enough.  Check with Corp IT for symantic software for employees who connect to work pc from home pc

Yep I did that earlier and installed it on my pc the exact one we use at work. Still no go. looks like defender is trumping the symantec AV we use on my home pc.

Right click on your taskbar and run task manager. Look for a process called msmpeng.exe and shut it down and see if you can log in remotely. You might have to shoow processes from all users to see it. If you can log in then indeed Defender is your problem. Might need to tweak your firewall settings. If you can't shut it down, run a cmd prompt and run msconfig and stop the MS antimalware service from starting at boot and reboot.

looking at all users I can't find that .exe on there.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall Windows Defender and restart, then try again.

It is not in the list to uninstall

Look for defender. You running xp or vista? I'm guessing you are trying to vpn into a corp. domain. See my edit above about msconfig except look for defender in the services tab

not in there, I read it was integrated into somthing

Wonder if you're going to have to disconnect from the network, uninstall both, then only install the work approved AV, then reconnect to the network.
11/1/2012 6:00:19 PM EDT
[#15]
Look for MS Antimalware then.

from what I am reading windows defender is integrated into windows 7. Does this make sense?

Yes but on mine it shows up as a stopped service. Also look for MS Antimalware.

It would be windefend under 'Services' and msmpeng.exe under processes.

nvm

Look for the Antimalware service and stop it then try and log in to your network

type services.msc in the run dialogue find the service, set it to disabled then restart and try and login.

windows defender isn't good enough. I wouldn't let you on my network either. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials, it works well and it's free. Also, if you have SEP installed, it looks like you're infected or you've disabled the realtime protection. I'd uninstall SEP and install MSE.

This is obviously an enforcement policy on the WAN VPN group.  MSE would likely cause the same problem.

OP how critical is this?  Do you need it fixed now or can it wait until you talk to your company's IT guy tomorrow?

There’s no need to mess with Windows Defender. It sounds to me like the firewall won’t let you on without a real antivirus program installed on your system.

Go to this site…

www.ninite.com

… and install Microsoft Security Essentials or AVG, or whatever. Just check the box, click on “get installer” and follow the instructions. Then try again.

I don’t know what AV you need but there’s no harm in installing Microsoft Security Essentials. (But only install one. Multiple AV software can be bad.)

He's got SEP installed now, but it still won't let him on.

He shouldn't be having a problem either way as I've run the same config except XpPro into a corporate network.

I was gonna offer to do a TeamViewer session and take a look at it if it were critical.  But if it can wait, your IT guy should be able to handle it.

I am good for now. I really appreciate the offer.

Your Network Access Control is jacking you up.

Looks like you ought to have the realtime protection turned on but it could be more.

My NAC can test for +80 parameters before letting a client connect - each one of them has parameters to set.

I know nothing about networking and computers. I can tell you what the IT person told me earlier today. They said to only have one AV installed on my PC, and if that one or any other AV on the PC is not on the approved list they sent me then it won't let me log on.
