What the hell is Windows D.E.P? and why is it preventing a computer game from downloading?
I recently formatted my laptop and did a full re-install from the factory CD and now I am having problems downloading the program from Blizzards website. I have never had a problem before this, hell never even heard of D.E.P at all.
I try to run the down loader off my desktop, but when it loads up it stops working and Windows tells me that DEP has stopped this application. I have tried running it in admin mode as well with the same results.
Anyone have an answer how to fix this?

Looks like you need to disable it to run your program.

Change Data Execution Prevention settings

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats by monitoring your programs to make sure they use system memory safely.

If you choose to protect all programs, you can still turn off DEP for individual programs. If you suspect that a program does not run correctly when DEP is turned on, check for a DEP-compatible version of the program or an update from the software publisher before you change any DEP settings.

  1. Open System by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.

  2. Click Advanced System Settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  3. Under Performance, click Settings.

  4. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

    Show all

To turn off DEP for an individual program

    • Select the check box next to the program that you want to turn off DEP for, and then click OK.

If the program is not in the list, click Add. Browse to the Program Filesfolder, find the executable file for the program (it will have an .exe file extension), and then click Open.

Just make sure the program is virus free first.

I turn that shit off...it annoys the hell out of me.
I do it to my dad's computer when I visit, but he turns it back on because 1. He hates
seeing the little red shield in the tray reminding him it's off. and 2.
"It'll help me not get viruses"
He's had two fairly good viruses in the last year. Me 0.
DEP is annoying...turn it off (good instructions above...)

Well I attempted to add the .exe files that are needed to run the program to the list, but Windows won't let me. Says that this program must run within the DEP. Any other options?
Why the hell is the first time in 3 years i have had this problem with this computer?

Its World of Warcraft. I have downloaded it before from the companies own website, been playing for three years and never had this happen before.

My guess is that you aren't under an admin account so it won't let you edit the DEP settings...correct?

Only one account on the computer. Unless the re-install changed something that I wasn't aware of. When I boot up the comp all I have is my one password for myself. No one else uses it.
there isnt any optiosn to completely tunr off the DEP, only to:
"Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only
"Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select

and yes, i know its WOW. and I'm actually quite a bit better than I used to be. But I still play late at nights when there's nothing good on TV. keeps me out of the bars and saves me a bit of money in the long run
