Windows 7 defaults folders to detail view.

I HATE Detail view.  I don't care when the folder was last modified.  I can see what type of file it is from the extension and icon.  And detail view has a size column which does not displace the size of the folder.

Useless.

I much prefer list view.  However no matter everything I have tried, it always defaults to detail view.  I am sick of clicking on list view on each and every folder each and every time I go to it.

How do I set windows to default to list view?
