Well the wife just announced how wonderful it was that her friends husband is getting her a digital camera for Christmas and that that was such a great gift idea.
Ok, I can take a hint, so I need recommendations for the best camera for around $300 or less.
We are camera challenged and usually go for the most "user friendly" version available. We use a regular 35mm now and this would'nt be a replacement for that. It would be for posting pics for ebay and emailing kid pics to family.
So any help would be appreciated.
Thanks [:D]

I just got a Sony Cybershot and I like it. It replace a HP something that crapped out after a few months, which I later found out was a problem and Wal-Mart had even pulled them off the shelves. It takes pretty good pictures and is easy to load onto your computer. All you have to do is install the software, then whenever you plug your camera in to upload pics the software opens itself and you just click on what pics you want to upload. Pretty simple and straighforward.

I'd go with one made by a company that is known for making quality cameras ie Canon/Minolta/Nikon. Optical lens quality and optical zoom is way more important that those bogus digital zoom claims.

Olympus C-700-UZ, This is a discontinued model and can be had for $300.00 to $350.00. GREAT VALUE, with full features.

I was in the same boat as you, and some very helpful board members came to my aid.

In particular, take a look at www.cnet.com & www.pricewatch.com

Hope it helps.

It's a 2.0 MP. I agree with Atarian also, that optical zoom is better. Digital zoom looks like shit if you want to take pictures of something really close.

It takes better pictures than the one I posted. I finally broke down and looked in the manual to read about the options and how to set them up for different types of pictures. I just haven't uploaded them yet.

Canon s330 2.1 megapix is one of the best camera's out there.

Next month it will be replaced by there "newer" model, and it will drop by at least $50 bucks.

You really should do yourself a favor and buy an extra battery and a larger memory card at the same time as your purchase.

www.buydig.com is a great website I found that is a good mix of price and upgrade packages.

Next month I'll pick up the Canon S330 for around $250 and add another $120 for 128 fast flash memory, extra battery, case, and cleaning kit.

Not bad price.

BTW- that buydig.com site is weird, the price has changed DAILY on the camera over the last week.

Last week the camera was $270, now its $296.
I'll wait AFTER christmas to see what happens to the price.

Some good info there.....

Canon makes a fine camera.

Pick one in your price range and go nuts.

Here's where I got the best price and pretty darn good service, had it in a week:

FWIW....I just upgrade out of that range and I got a Sony CD-R based camera, as size was not a consideration factor for me.  I'm used to toting a full size Cano EOS around with all the toys.

One more thing...

You need to come to grips with the megapix number.

The pixil size resolves down to a resolution.

2.1 will give you a 1600x1200 pictures.

I don't know if you know much about digital stuff but that HUGE! On a normal peice of 8x11 paper, the image will be condensed on to that paper as it is.

Unless you have some LARGE photo's to print or want to zoom into your already taken pictures 2.1 megapix is perfectly fine!

The optics usually are nicer in the higher megapix/price camera'.

If your a normal picture taker, save yourself some dough and find a 2.1 megapix with GOOD optics and optical zoom. (3 optical zoom is fine)

Yeah to the megapixel thing......my Sony takes 2242x1600 or something like that -- 4.1 megapixel.  On my screen at work, 19" CRT, the size of a face takes up nearly the whole viewing area when viewed at 100%.

I take most of my shots now on 640x400 for email and net type compatablity.

WoW...thanks for all the advice !!!  I think that a 2.0 or 2.1 megapixel and 3.0 optical zoom will be just fine. As far as batteries go, if I read this right, get one with rechargables, not regular alkalines correct ?
and which memory option is best ?

I used a Kodak this weekend which used a smart media card 128mb which at the highest resolution would give 60 pictures and at lowest it would give 129 or so.

I'd say get one with a USB interface and the media card matters not as you can download immediately to a HardDisk/CPU supported storage.

Canon Powershot A40 - $250 - 2.1MPixel - 3X Optical Zoom - 1.5X Digital Zoom - Uses CompactFlash cards (128MB currently $45.89 delivered via 2Day at Crucial.com) - Uses regular AA Alkaline batteries so when your rechargable ones die in the middle of an outing, you can replace them readily - Easy to use, yet retains both Aperture Priority and Full Manual control for those who like to play.

Edited to add:  The 128MB Flash card holds just under 100 pics at hi-res (1600x1200).

I bought a Sony DSC-P31, it has a 3X digital zoom, 2.0 mgpix and no sound for the mpg recorder.
It cost me $179 on sale.

The things I don't like about it are the 8mg memory stick (I just bought 2 128mg memory sticks from Office Max at $49 each with all discounts) and the long time (13 hour) charge for the battries.
I have the PS4 Rayovac 1 hour NimH battery charger though that I bought for my aa toys.
http://www.rayovac.com/products/recharge/chargers.shtml

Here is a picture of my Glock taken with the zoom all the way in and about 3 inches away.

If I had the money I would have bought the Sony DSC-71.
