I can't use USB drives on my computer. I am running XP, got all kinds of RAM. When I plug them in Windows will recognize the drive in the "My Computer" listing but when I go to use it it tells me drive must be formatted. Well I tell it to format the drive and then it comes back and says that Windows could not format the drive. I have other devices in and operating on my USB ports. I have swapped ports around etc... I have 2 different drives one a 128MB and a brand new 1GB. Both do this. I pulled out a Zip drive that had developed the "click of death" and now I want to use the 1GB for backup purposes. But the damn thing won't let me. Help please! |

Usually, problems like this are the result of buggy 3rd-party drivers that have replaced the standard Windows USB drivers. You often hear Microsoft being blamed, when it's really the 19-year-old kid who some little company paid $10 an hour to write them a driver for their neato-kewlie USB coffee-cup warmer or whatever. What other USB devices do you have? Try uninstalling them. Also, try going to the manufacturer's website and see if there are any known driver conflicts that might affect your flash drives. Finally, try the flash drives on another computer. -Troy |
When I select properties for the drives it shows them as RAW with 0 bytes. Does this help? No files are listed. The 128 I brought home from work and it did work there. The new 1GB shows 983MB when I try to format it. Then it pops up with the window that Windows was unable to complete format. |
With the drives being "seen" and everything, what or where would I find the drivers to correct this? When I look in device manager they are listed and no issues are indicated. I tried to update the drivers it came back and told me that the current driver was the best one. |
The 128MB has one. It is unlocked. I should still be able to read the drive though. At least I would think that I should. |
