We're talking about the Afro, that hairy symbol of black pride and self-determination so popular in the 1960s and '70s.

Is it really back?

For some, it is. In various forms of revival and revision.

Eddie Brown definitely has one -- hair growing upward and outward in sort of a natural fuzzy crown.

The freshman at American River College wears an Afro so big that people either look at him strangely or ask if they can touch it, and his mother threatens to cut it down herself.

Brown's 'fro -- as they are commonly referred to now -- took a year to grow. And he's not about to lose it.

"I like it just the way it is -- big and sorta round," Brown says. "It's not hard to take care of, and I don't have to worry about anyone giving me a messed-up haircut anymore."

I'm goona let my hair grow out and get me a nice white fro baby!!!!!!
