And I want it to plug into a cigarette lighter, either to recharge or as a power source.

I have a 1 million candle power one now that's fairly dated, but it doesn't do a well enough job for longer range stuff. Something with a tight beam that I can identify animals and a few hundred yards at least.

Probably $200 max.

These get pretty good reviews but I have no personal experience with it. It looks like it would be a pain in the ass to use in a truck compared to a pistol gripped light though.

I recommend getting a custom modded flashlight for extended spotlighting. The cost advantage of getting a modded light is superior to factory built ones typically, with greater performance.

This is a custom modder over at CPF. He is well respected and trusted, just email him with what you want and PayPal.

He has a massive selection.

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?371949-V54-Light-List

Even if you do not go the mod route that list is an excellent starting point for spotlights all in one place. They are all the stock manufacturer names just with a vn added at the end for the modder

I have a large stock spotlight the Olight sr95. They also sell the sr95ut version which is tweaked for a more refined spotlight but the thing is huge. However, it exceeds your price.

For a modded light I recommend the Olight sr52vn - on that list. It's handheld and compact and gives great distance and is under budget, its still a spotlight.

However there are many options on that list that would fit the build for what you need, you would be able to better identify exactly what you want than I.

ETA both of those specific lights I have that I suggested have car charging capabilities. The SR52 (which they now have a newer generation of) has a micro usb port on the body. If you don't have a micro usb car charger you can buy the car kit that comes with one. The SR95 is $100 over budget but comes with a car plug and a wall plug that goes directly into the light, not micro usb.

Excellent information and the link is awesome. I have been over to CPF a handful of times but never found what I was looking for, I'll go through his list and check them out. Thanks for all the info.

Any interest in the stream light long range rifle mounted light? I have two and they work great for distance. Can also pop off the rifle and use it by hand. $120

Can you tell between coyotes and deer at that range with binos?

How about between bucks and does? No, I'm not poaching, I live on a few thousand acres of farmland and just like to cruise around and see what wanders around in the fields at night.

I've looked into it, but I do have 2 Surefire x300ultra lights aready, they're good to a couple hundred yards, but wash out after that. But I'm looking for something to hang out the pickup window and not worry about replacing batteries in.

Maybe check out the m3x- ut javelot. I believe it is quoted at a thousand yards and is priced around 150. It lacks the internal charging capabilities but for the savings just get a charger and a handful of spare batteries. People in the flashlight community were very excited for the release of this light.

Without going with one of Vinh's modified (dedomed) lights, The M3X Javelot is the current throw king in that 1-2 18650 class.

My buddy has a few Vinh lights, including the then 'throw king' Fenix TK 61 v.4, dedomed XM-L2 U3.  That light is basically a three quarter mile laser beam, but it's a few hundred bucks.

Jeez....all these fancy light to so all these different things. I just want something that I can flip a switch on and it throws a beam out to at least 500yds bright enough to identify between critters at that distance.

Something like this, but with a big bad LED light in it and a tight beam.

Unfortunately, that form factor is largely dead. You can still pick them up at Wal-Mart and some may have swapped out the incans for leds. The problem with them are more are cheap and non regulated lights. As the batteries get weaker the light gets dimmer. They are largely inefficient and excess heat will wear out their circuitry and wiring pretty fast.

The modern equivalent to what you are asking for is the Olight X6 Marauder. It's pretty much exactly what you want, but it isn't cheap it is running around the $400 mark.

This is the age of the torch, which is why you see so many options in that form factor and have the same or far greater capabilities. Because the market for these spotlights cater to such a small market subset you see a pot of extra features for quality and versatility purposes. Many times I utilize almost none of these, but it's nice that they are there.

The M3X Javelot has 3 light settings and a strobe. So does my big spotlight. I just leave it on high and let it be. It's only as complicated as you want it to be. The bottom line is that they make what you want at big box stores, but for that extra step in quality and performance it's going to cost you. To get a "perfect" light, it's going to cost a fortune.

I can field the question over at CPF for you and see if some of the more knowledgeable people over there can throw out a suggestion or two. I'll post back with a link.

This isn't rechargeable like you want, but for truck use this one is king.

I've shot thousands of varmints using these (really; thousands).

You need to look into Lightforce lights.  Their magic is in the reflector.  With a 170 unit I could see 1/4 mile easy.  The 240mm unit is crazy bright and plugs into your cig lighter.

That seems to be a step in the right direction. There's tons a super bright spotlights advertised, but they cost $20 and that scares me. I like buying stuff right, not buying stuff twice.

I love helping people find flashlights! It is all the thanks I need.

Have you found the goinggear.com website? Their specialty is flashlight retail. The owner Marshall has a YouTube channel in which he has several reviews of flashlights on table top and then takes them out to do a 100 yard test vs a maglight. The real treasure videos are where he takes a huge amount of spotlights out to a 400 yard farm and compares their performance. His website has an 11% discount sitewide until November 30th using the coupon code: spookiness

Here is his channel, I highly reccomend it.
