What would be best? I have a 7ish yr. old computer PIII550, 512mb RAM, 32mb video.  Kinda the norm of the time.  I want to hook it to my TV and the graphics card has a composite out.  Since we don't have a fancy new LCD TV with a 15 pin input this will work fine for now.

Really we only have one other computer (a laptop) and we want to watch netflix on the TV.

I don't think many current distributions will help you with that old of hardware.   Maybe Windows 98?

I've got 11 Linux distros installed here, to learn from them and try them out.

I like openSuse the best, most functional and user friendly.  This is a Ford vs Chevy kind of thing.  There are many good distros out there now, but I like openSuse with the KDE desktop the best compared to all the others I've got installed or have tried out.

My hardware is just as old or older than yours, and openSuse detected all of it while installing.

I use this distro every day and am using it now.

Damn Small Linux should work.

I don't think the online Netflix thing will work in Linux though. Will it work in IEs4Linux?

Debian or don't bother.

If you know what you're doing, slackware is really good with old hardware.

eta:
run something like fluxbox as a window manager.

I don't know how well the Ubuntu distros will like the older hardware, but they are very easy to install and use. i've installed Ubuntu on a friend's computer to stop all the popups and viruses, he has been able to do everything he did on windows.

Slackware.

I don't know which one is current, but slackware period works damn good.  It's minimalistic so you don't have all these kernel modules for hardware you don't have loaded into the RAM.  Try to get a distro compiled for 586 arch.

I have always liked Ubuntu. Xubuntu is supposed to run better on older PCs.

This might be something to try:

linux mint fluxbox edition

Linux Mint Fluxbox CE aims to be lean and fast. It should be able to run on older hardware allowing people with weak to mediocre machines to enjoy the awesomeness of Linux Mint.

ETA:  I'm installing it right now on a 533mhz mini-itx box I had sitting around.

Just try a few live versions and see what works and what dont.

If it works live, it will work installed.

Not newer versions on that old of a computer.  Maybe if he isn't going to run X11, but I doubt that will be the case.
