Someone says, "I'm going to leave the state," referring to, oh, let's say, California. Is it supposed to be "leave the State" or "leave the state"? State is referring to a specific state in this case, not states in general.

What do you think?

I would say capitalize State.

As you're referring to a specific one.

Same w/ God.

I.E.  "Do you worship a god or gods?"

"Do you believe in God?"

Thanks, fivepoint.

Does anyone disagree?

Oh, and that line is about to be printed in 100,000 books.

I would say state as "state". If he was saying I'm going to leave California, California should be capitalized.

According my to my AP styleguide it's fine to lowercase it in all aspects of its usage.

It's a small "s."

This link, for what it's worth, agrees:

State, state, ect.
