Alright guys, my fiancee's computer is completely fucked. It's an old Dell and we both realize it's time for her to upgrade it and move on to bigger and better things. We're looking for a basic computer, but one that will run video games with decent quality gaming and will be able to handle multiple open windows. MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT IT'S RELIABLE!!! I don't care if it's a compaq, hp, dell, gateway, or some other smaller boutique brand that's "up and coming." I don't care if it's AMD or Pentium based and to be honest, I don't know what's good or bad these days, so I'll take your word on it. ALTERNATIVE PROJECT: Help me BUILD a computer by posting a combination of components from NewEgg or Tigerdirect that you feel would fit our requirements. I don't care if it's a Micro, full tower, mid tower, etc. Just as long as it'd be BETTER than a store bought computer for equal money. BUDGET IS $550 TOTAL. That is for the computer only, as her screen is still good and we can upgrade that later. |
Buy one then upgrade it when you can i.e graphics card, memory, audio etc..... Thats what I did and my current setup (HP) does everything I need it to do , from everyday work to gaming. |
Just go to newegg.com - Look at their barebones systems. Add the best hardware you can that still fits within your budget. Please do not get a celeron or duron. Also, at least 1gb of memory, and least 128mb video card, preferably ATI, maybe PCI express. I like P4s, but AMD is great too. Get whatever fits your budget and which you prefer. You can get 120gb harddrives, CHEAP. You can find DVD/CD players cheap. Just depends what you want. |

Get a refurbed Mac. I'm 4 years virus free. Old printers I had out in the garage hook up and work with out loading a bunch of wizards and drivers (just an example of how functional they are.) They fuggin' run and run and run and run...if it's reliability you want then try them out. I don't mean to make this a Mac vs PC debate, I'm just sayin'... |
A lot of times when you buy a budget computer like that you can't upgrade it. Things like graphics cards are soldered in and can't be upgraded. |
| I went and priced the cost to upgrade my system with new MOBO, hard drives, processor, and vid card. If you want to go cheap, then it can be done for your budget. I would suggest going to newegg and just looking around because I found a decent looking set of parts for around $400 |
Fully upgradable. It's the simple internal vid card on the mobo. The mobo also has a slot for a PCIE X16 video card. Now what do I upgrade my card to? My budget is under $200 and I'd like it to be an SLI card. |
Nvidia 8800? |
That's almost the same system I built almost 3 months ago. Price the same on the same Gigabyte board, paid about $40 dollars more for the AMD 5200, same price for a 500w Rosewill power supply, $88 for G.Skill DDR2 6400 (now $65) and Seagate 320gig SATA HD for $65. Got a Rosewill case and a Lite-on DVD burner and ASUS CD burner. Highly recommend a card reader ( Rosewill reader $12). Had the video card ( nVid 7600 GTS). Altogether it was $550 with shipping. |
