Well, this sure will generate a shit storm. We recently read Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol, which leads our class into our paper. For those that don't know, it's about how crappy East St. Louis. This paper is a research type of thing and here's the prompt: "So, ask yourself this important question: how can the plight of East St. Louis be improved? As you consider possible 'answers' to this 'question', begin a search for scholarly sources that may support your recommendation(s) for the city." I've been mulling this over for a little while now and I'm thinking maybe implementing a very strong and well-trained police force to crack down on all the crime. This seems like a "No-win" scenario. Maybe the hive has some ideas? |

bring in capitalism, allow the free market to take effect. No money for free food or housing will drive out the riff raff give tax breaks for grocery stores and middle class retail to encourage reinvestment... basically you don't need police to deal with economic problems. |

Maybe...from what I read free market IS in effect. The reading stated pretty well about how all the money goes to drugs, strip-clubs, liquor, gambling and lotto. Sounds like GD... ![]() |

Quoted: Not really, if that was true they'd freeze to death in the winter and starve to death in 3-4 weeks like 28 days later. No something is subsidizing their lives and allowing them to spend disposable income on vice. Bam, I love it. I'm going to find some sources to back this logic up. |
