Looking to add a CCTV system to monitor the premise.  Would like to record to a PC.  Need some suggestions on camera(s), software, and other hardware.  Would like them to have IR too.  Let me know what you recommend, I'll take all the help I can get.

You can go from VERY low-end to commercial grade.  Some all-in-one systems they have aren't half bad for the bucks.

Before we get into what you can do, here is the most important question:  How much are you willing to spend?  The IR/IP cam they have goes for $559.95.

BTW:  You may just want to get regular cams and go with a Digital Video Recorder (DVR).  Make sure it will interface with your PC.  The IP cams are for remote viewing online.

I have been using DigiVue components & software for a couple of years now.

Good stuff, affordable and dependable.  They have a wide range of products.

DigiVue Video

I record 4 views of my property outside, and a couple more inside.  I store the video on a well concealed machine connected to my network.  Any would-be burglar may get a couple of computers, but I will still have the video.

One camera watches my mailbox - and has already solved a mail problem...

Have you tried a Sam's Wholesale Club or COSTCO to see what they have in a pre-configured system?

I have installed overt and covert camera systems for a long time, but I won't do it commercially because I can't beat their prices. Also, Preconfigured means that all the cables are already pieced together and ready to go, tested and proven to work. Piecing a system together (like building a computer or an AR15) is only good if you LIKE doing it. Otherwise it's a pain in the ass to de-bug once you get the system in place.

I'd look for a hard-drive recorder, videotapes are going to go the way of the buggy-whip soon.

I would prefer to not spend $600 per camera.  I'm looking for a 3-4 camera setup for the time being.  Im not completely set on the IR feature on all the cameras, but would at least like 1 to be IR.  I'm by no means looking for a full PTZ system with domes.  I just need a basic quality system to cover the register, door, safe, etc.

I was peeking around on that CCTV Outlet Specials page and some cameras look like what I need, but how is the quality?  I dont want something that I'll need to replace after a year.  What features should I look for in a camera?  What about some of the "packages" that are on egay?

You are in Athens, right?   How often do you get to Duluth (GA)?

Fry's carries a 4 camera bundle from Digivue, with all of the hardware, and the software as well.

I hate to see anti-gun e-barf get ANY of your money, not to mention the hassels of dealing with some of the asswipes that sell on there.

They had This SYSTEM for about 30 bucks less, last time I was in the store.  Or just buy it from the link above.   Nightvision, weatherproof, 100 foot cables, software included.  Less than 600 bucks.  Hard to go wrong.

I just put in a 4-cam system with DVR for a customer, with equipment from SuperCircuits.  The cameras use Sony ExView CCDs and are VERY clear and light-sensitive.  These cams see better in the dark than you do.

Do you want to go static or PTZ? Remote access capability?

Most Black and White cameras are heat sensitive and you get better deffinition for less money compared to color camera.

Here is an interesting site, whether or not it meets your needs:

www.video-monitoring.com/index.htm

BTW, the Kodak DC-4800 software available for download at this site is an excellent upgrade for the Kodak DC-290 camera.

I bought some from www.discount-security-cameras.net.

Their shipping was quick and the products are great.  I bought the $129 IR bullet cams.  They work very well.

ETA:  The ones I have are here:  www.discount-security-cameras.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=254

I grabbed a PCI DVR card from evilbay for $125 and supports 8 cams.

It's some bastardized kodicom stuff that takes over your pc, but I have a separate box just for the cams.  Works like a champ.

I have a 4 camera, pre-configured system with matched cables, central power source, 20" color monitor with quad-plex interchange and bi-directional sound to all cameras (can hear what camera is seeing and can speak from monitor thru each camera) in my shed collecting dust. All it needs is a DVR to attach to the preconfigured output.

I bought it for a job last year that fell through and I haven't been able to sell it yet. I'd make you a sweet deal on entire the package but I'm in Tulsa.

Yeh that does cause a bit of complication, thanks for the offer though.

Anybody have any experience with Geovision cards and software?

For those who are interested, I ended up going with the cameras that rdblan2 recommended.  (Thanks for the video feeds) and ended up going with a Geovision GV-800 4 Camera card.  The card was quite expensive but decided to go with it because of all the software package and extra features that are included.  So far I have been very impressed with it all, of course I'm still waiting on the cameras to show up.  I am able to view the cameras through the net or from another computer on the network.  I have a dual monitor setup with one dedicated to a 2x2 split screen of the video feeds.  I think its all going to work out really well.  thanks for all the help/suggestions.  If you have any advice or quick tips on the geovision software I'll be glad to listen.
