Nato headstamp, rest is "TW" and "68". It's a .7.62 X 51 round. Where was it produced and where can I get some more?

SA?I should say that it is NATO 7.62x51. The A 78 is a bit different tho the R1M1 is correct on the SA. I don't know for sure that is SA tho. Mine is headstamped R1M1 B81 7.62

I posted this in the ammo forum a couple months ago and never got a definitive answer.  Still have a couple hundred rounds of this stuff:

OK, my local gun shop has this for 5.95/box of 40:

It's in a brown box, 40 rounds. Marking on the box

40 CARTRIDGES
5.56 MM. BALL
40 RD. CARTON

LOT CHP 870
MFR. DATE 17 AUG 1981

Lot number and date are stamped.

Headstamp on the ammo is

H1
5.56

And it has some green primer sealant. 55 grain bullet, I think. Any guesses?

I've had this stuff for about 5years, brown boxes of 20, box is marked

20
Round
7,62x51mm
ball R1. M1

201
A978

My question would be is it non-corrosive?
Yes, it does look like surplus South African boxes but slightly different numbers.
I'm guessin 1978 and non-corrosive

Thanks Joe

Is it berdan primed? [2 small holes instead of one large central one?] If it's SA it's Non corrosive. My 81 stuff has a purple primer sealer. The info on the package sounds awfully simular to my SA. Good stuff.

I keep coming up with African??? or Brit ammo every time the H1 comes up. Past that.....nothing. I can't believe its SA as I have 81 stuff and it has purple sealent.

Well then I am sure you won't like this either: " 7.62 Jarhead".  That sounds like a good round to shoot.
"What are you shooting?"
"7.62 Jarhead."
"Cool!"

Humor is a contribution.

True, but it was in no way funny, just dumb.

Well, since it's gotta be milsurp, I'd check at the shows, with some of the surp places and the likes. Heck, I just ran across a bunch of 60s LC carbine in strippers at the last show. Looked NEW, I bought 5oo rounds, Bit steep at 75 bucks per 500 but it was real nice stuff. He had a bunch of USGI surplus stuff. .45, 308, 30/06, 30 carbine. I would have bought more except I had already bought a FAL and the wallet was flat.

Was that the guy who sells AR barrels along with ammo? Usually sits against the back wall at shows?

Actually, no, he was an older guy, first time I have seen him at the show. He had a lot of nice ammo, not the usual banged around stuff, I had a feeling he is just an old guy selling off stock. He had some 1911 bits and pieces, [got several USGI extractors] but mostly ammo. Had match GI .45 ammo which I have shot in the past, GOOD stuff from the late 60s. I thought that was gone a few years ago. Some old 5.56 stuff also. All the brass looked great. no corrosion at all. Nother show first week in nov, we'll see if he is there again.
