If you haven't already heard about this horrible accident read the storyhere.
12/20/02) YONKERS - Two people are dead and six others injured after a fatal accident on the thruway in Yonkers. Investigators spent hours trying to figure out exactly what caused this fiery multi-car crash that took the life of a New York State Trooper. A moment of silence was held as the fallen trooper was taken from his wrecked car. The trooper parked the cruiser behind two other vehicles involved in a fender bender as a tow truck driver worked with them. Before the cars could be removed from the exit ramp off the thruway and onto the Cross County Parkway, a gray SUV smashed into the back of the trooper's car, forcing all four cars forward. The trooper remained trapped in the car as it burst into flames. Witnesses tried, but could not free the officer. State police say 31-year-old Robert Ambrose of Pearl River is the trooper who was killed. Ambrose had been working at the Tarrytown Barracks. The other fatality was someone from the jeep that crashed into the trooper's car. Investigators are not sure if he was the driver. Three other people that were in the jeep are being treated at Westchester Medical Center.

There were unconfirmed reports of three gunshots heard, possibly from the Trooper who was trapped inside the car or another LEO on the scene.

My guess would be the driver of the Jeep.

Unfortunately the Crown Vic had been the focus of a special gas tank retrofit from Ford after at least 12 other Police Officers were killed in a similar manner. They were supposed to put steel plates around the gas tanks to prevent this, however the department in which Trooper Ambrose is from has only one car finished with said plating. Since GM and Chrysler no longer make a Police Package vehicle the LE agencies are left with no other chioce but to use the Crown Vic.

I survived this: The drunk that did this spent only 6 months in jail. I pray for the Trooper Ambrose and his family.

Dallas is about to file suit against Ford for the exact same thing.

DonR, as I'm sure your aware Dallas just recently lost an officer to the same kind of accident, it was even a Jeep that hit the cruiser. Any PD that still uses these firebombs after so many officers have been lost in them needs to be sued severly enough to show them the error of their ways. It is totaly irresposible to expect people to drive these things in their line of work every day.
