Yes, long gone are the days of cheap ammo and expensive USGI mags; but they still live on in our minds, and this thread

Back when Wolf was for losers and was coated in that stinky lacquer, back when XM prefix Lake City was snubbed as supremely inferior and not worthy of Arf's safe queens...

Post your favorite ammo deals of yesteryear...I'll start:

My all time favorite was the IMI M193. It came in 1200 rd cases in 30rd boxes. Price: $140/case...shipped to my door

I shot more of that stuff than any other 5.56. In fact I still have some, as well as a couple empty cases marked: "Lot # 223"

A close second was the South African that came on stripper clips in bandoleers; that shit shot a giant fireball out the muzzle and sometimes little sparks from the chamber

Fun times.

But they are gone
Post your ammo stories and let us not forget the good times...

Portuguese 7.62*51 at $145 per case of 1,000 at local gun shows.

1980s Soviet 7.62*54R LPS at $40 a tin of 440.  Your eyes and shoulder know the difference between this stuff and the rest.

I miss the 7.62x39 brass case for $1.99/box.

And the 200 rd. battlepack of 308 for $39.95. Same thing is over $90 now

On a related note, I miss the FAL mags for $5 too

Chinese copper washed 7.62x39 at $75 for an 1100 round case, and it wasn't selling because everyone already had it stacked up at home.

That's all I remember.

A while ago i was digging through my ammo and I found a box of that Chinese copper plated 7.62x39 with a sticker on the box: $1.99

It's neat looking, but i can't even remember buying it, let alone how it shot

I remember buying a couple thousand rounds of South African 7.62x51 for .16rd, then the price went up and I bought another couple thousand at .19rd. Then a couple months later I went to the Big Reno Show and they had the same cases of South African for .29rd, and I was WTF?? thats a crazy increase.

Now I would be damn happy to pay that.

I remember being surprised the next year when it "jumped" to $65 per 500....

Forget the Portugese stuff. I have 3 cases left of the South African I got for $120 a case. The way the price keeps going up on it I can hold on to it a few more years and retire. Last time I saw any it was ~$65 for a battlepack. There's 9 to a case and I have a couple of extra packs laying around. At that price I'm sitting on more than $1800 worth that I got for around $400.

Forget gold, invest in ammo!

That's the one that leapt to my mind. I always put off getting a bunch of it, because it was a hassle to dolley it out of the gun show. I wish wish wish that I had stacked it floor to ceiling.

I DID, however stack the FNM 7.62 nato pretty deep when I got it for 100 bucks a case. There was a very short time that it was available at that price. Also the South African stuff when it was 1200 +/- rds for about 170.

Now, I won't hardly shoot the stuff cause it's irreplaceable.

wolf 5.56 for $90/1000 at the local gun shows as late as 04 IIRC.

Those were the days. My GF would run 2500 rounds through her AR in an afternoon when I first bought it for her. She was disappointed that we always ran out because she didn't realize what it cost yet. When I told her she was shocked. And that was back then!

Obligatory pics.

Not ammo prices, but firearm nostalgia still:

It is summer 1995.

I am Ten years old.

I am on holiday at Butlins (I saw the Chuckle Brothers).

I have my various Firearm and Airgun magazines with me.

I am looking at the adverts for handguns, drooling.

I am mentally picking out what I will buy when I am old enough (I couldn't wait to grow up back then) .

Just under two years later...

BANNED

Later that year, they 'take aim' at the previously legal .22 and below calibre weapons.

DOUBLE BANNED

I can remember when you could buy a SKS and a case of 7.62x39 for about $110.

People were walking out of the shows with a case of SKS's and hand dolly's stacked high with 7.62x39.  Wish I knew then what I know now.

My all time favorite was begging my dad to buy a Norinco AK in the styrofoam kit with 3 mags, Bayo and cleaning kit for $169.  There were pallets full of them for sale.  He told me, "boy, why would you want that thing?" and didn't buy it for me.  I had the cash too, just wasn't old enough to do the paperwork.

O yea, I still have some of the brown tubs of south african 5.56 I bought for $200 per 2700 rounds.  At least I was smart enough to buy and stack up that stuff.

Got a stack of 8mm crates that I bought for $30 each too.

I mostly reload. 8 pound kegs of powder for $70, primers for $11/thousand and brass was free or almost free.

$9.99 for 500 rounds of Remington Thunderbolt or Winchester Wildcat .22 at Kmart, early 90's. 1440 rounds of Chinese 7.62x39 for less than $80 at gunshows, early 90's. There was actually a glut of 7.62x39 back then. You almost had to give it away.

I was lucky.  Stocked up when Barnaul "marlboro man" 7.62x39 was about $80/1000, Izzy Winchester Q3131a 55gr was $120/1000, Czech silvertip was like $60 per whateverthehell is in the crate ()... Someone or other cleared out a bunch of Wolf poly case x39 with the non-expanding HP's at $60/1000 near the end there, and I stocked that up just for blasting.  Still have some, still not a fan.  The golden tiger stuff started in not long after that, wish I'da waited and got on that instead.

I picked up bricks of .22 Colibri at $9 per, Super Colibri was $11 per.  Got a shit ton of Winchester T22 for something ridiculous that I remember thinking was a misprint even then but can't exactly remember.  I want to say $6 a brick, but that sounds just flat crazy.

I still have at least a little of all of the above, and they do represent some of the best deals available even then.  "Going rate" was around $180/1k for decent M193, $100/1k for Russian FMJ x39.

Then again, AMD-65 parts kits were going for $40
