Was going to go with a the New Dell Inspirons with the cool black piano cases but decided to build my own since it's been a few years since I did one.  Wanted to build a semi budget build. The new i7, DDR3, and motherboards were out of my price range

Intel Quad Core Q6600
Seagate ST31000 1TB HDD SATA OEM

Asus P5KPL-CM Mobo
Intel Dual Core E5200 (replaced with Quadcore above....this proc is for sale in EE)

GSkill 4GB PC8500 CL5-5-15 2.0-2.1V
Asus EAH4670 512MB DDR3 HDCP ready DVI and HDMI output

Cooler Master 650W 80Plus PSU
LG GGW-H20L Blu Ray disc burner on SATA

Antec Mini 80 quiet case
1x 120mm fan
1x 200mm fan on top

Seagate 500 GB SATA 16MB Cache Retail to load the OS Windows Home Premium X64

With the Dual Core got a Vista score of 5.3
With the Quad Core I got a 5.6

not a 5.9 due to the lowest score is the memory...may OC the memory to see if it raises it.

I think I came in under $900 dollars....I'm not sure....I knew what I wanted and just shopped around for deals.  Some stuff I did buy locally rather than online.
