The .338 Lapua is a very effective long range round and in a good belt fed, you would have a very powerful gun that offers a weight advantage over a .50 cal.

Somebodies making a .338 beltfed. Maybe not production, but T&E piece anyway.

Chrome lines quick change barrels.  And the taxpayers can pay for them.

The only problem with that is the increased possibility of a soldier or Marine having to swap a barrel under fire.  Does carrying more ammo more than make up for that compared to a .50? I dunno.  In a vehicle mounted gun I kind of doubt it.

Some things just aren't meant to scale. The MG42 mechanism is already running on the ragged edge, with 7.92X57 cartridge. I would wager that a conversion/upscaling to .338 Lapua without taking that into account for the basic mechanism would create problems. Some mechanisms just aren't suited for particular cartridges--Look at the issues the Spanish had making roller-locked 5.56mm weapons with the Modelo "L" and Ameli.

Dunno what mechanism would be best suited to the masses and pressure curves involved with the .338 Lapua, but I'd be really surprised if you could just scale up an MG42 mechanism to work with it.

A lot of folks just assume that because a weapon works well in one caliber, it will work well in others. That may be true for some designs, like the Madsen light machine gun, but it's not true of all of them.

If it kills a lot of people I don't like at long range I'm all for it.

Stampings are immaterial--None of the pressures in the MG42 design are placed on stamped components, at all. Both the barrel extensions and the bolts are all machined, and like the M16, they take all the pressure. The stampings merely serve as containers and guides.

That said, I'm not sure that the MG42 mechanism would necessarily scale up to the .338 Lapua. The weapon was designed around a specific cartridge, one with well-known pressure curves and recoil characteristics. A change of the magnitude necessary to get to .338 Lapua might prove to be more than the basic mechanism can actually handle reliably.

What about something midway between a 1919 and an M2?   Maxim guns could shoot all goddamn day long when chambered in normal rifle calibers, how might something like that (in the 40-50lb range) do in .338?

I have extensive Trigger time with this here .338 GPMG, you should see it rip up infantry at 1000 meters.

Do you even operate bro?

Oh, you could do it... I just don't know if it would be worth it, in the weight range you're talking, because that's way past "portable", which was the point of the MG42. There's no doubt it could be done, because the Maxim and M1919 were in fact scaled way past .338 Lapua level in the past.

8mm Mauser is a whole lot to ask a man to carry in a machine gun. 338 Lapua Magnum is a step beyond that.

When we invent better men, I will make sure they are designed to carry 338 LM belt feds.
