918 - Insane Person/Mentally Ill Person

One of my buddies likes to say "crazy as a shithouse rat".

Frequently we describe subjects as "a bit/pretty/very 918" or in the extreme "918 Lincoln-Mike-Frank" (like a motherfucker).

I have a buddy who used to be posted as the "New Construction Liaison" at his jail assignment, and he invented a radio handle for himself (usually we just go by last name) which was 918F.  Everyone on the facility would address him as 918 Frank, and it was a most fitting moniker.  Pretty funny too.

10-45 - Animal carcass in road

10-54 - Livestock in Roadway

I kinda like 10-69 though...

it means "message received"

It's cooler than saying 10-4 and you can draw it out and really tie up airtime if you say it right.

My favorite?

10-6                  Coffee break

10-7                  Meal

IN NY we called them EDPs, where I work now they're Mental Aided or 10-62s.

Hadn't heard that one.  We have Code 600 for crazy, also some units still say 10-96 for crazy.  Like OKLA says, 10-15 is a good one, especially if the guy has been a prick.  Again like OKLA says, 10-7 (out of service) is a good one after a long day--also in some contexts it means a person or animal or vehicle or whatever is dead.  I guess 10-8 is about the same for alot of places.

I don't know about you guys but when I get calls about mentals it usually goes like this "Mental with a knife refusing to take his medication or take a bath", why ,why do they refuse to take a  bath. Stinky mentals!

The Clawson medical code uses 25 as the base code for behavioral emergencies and a violent  crazy is a 25 Charlie or as we on the street call it "A Quarter Chuck".  Those three little words say it all.

When I was in EMS we had the county mental health contract and all the nuts were called 5150's.

We had certain other codes too:

A.C.T. Syndrome - All an act
S.P.S. - Sniveling Pussy Syndrome

We had another code (can't remember what it was) which meant the person either puked or shit on themselves and the cops didn't want to transport them to the jail and stink up their cruisers so they would say the person was ill and needed to go to County for "evaluation" (to get cleaned up) and we would have to transport...Sometimes even cuffed to the gurney... We didn't like those calls!

90 Nora-Nora

its not really used, but its an inside joke. Maybe some other NYPD guys here know what it means.

I'm not telling what it means. Lets just say its a disposition code, and 90% of the jobs in certain neighborhoods could be marked this way.

Don't like to hear it, but when 10-78 (officer needs assistance - 'round here means needs assistance because he is in or getting ready to be in a fight with a suspect) comes across the radio, that means drop what your doing, get your ass to that officer who needs assistance as fast as you can and kick the guys ass that made him call it out!!
1/17/2005 5:44:33 AM EDT
[#43]
We use normal language around here.  A few exceptions: call dispositions and we do use 7Mary: lunch break.  And our Big Dog is Dode 5: Officer about to get his ass kicked.

Kinda makes you wish we could standardize across the board, eh? We use the same 10 codes as our highway patrol but some of the surronding counties don't. Especially annoying when we get messages that use 10 codes that make no sense from other agencies. Of course coming from the military I can't understand why we can't just use military phonetics (sp?) as well.

Back on topic like Garand_Shooter we use 10-73 for mental subject.

Nothing beats a 901henry (dead body) during the summer in Phoenix.......... especially when they have been there for about a week!

My favorite to use is when I'm workin dispatch. Tellin' the cops that I'm in position 3: the crapper. We have radios in the bathrooom. Some of them get it, and some of the newbs don't.

On the fireground:
63-72 - On scene, working fire.
86 - Call Canteen/Prepare Food.

Must be nice to have radios in the head. We just have to hurry up! Of course we don't get lunch breaks either
