MUSKEGON HEIGHTS — Four people were injured, including one hit by a sheriff's deputy's gunfire, after shots erupted following a basketball game here Tuesday, Feb. 9. Police swarmed and cordoned off two scenes outside Muskegon Heights High School after the 9:30 p.m. shooting. Evidence markers dotted the parking lot outside the school. At a press conference, Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler said two males and one female suffered non-life threatening injuries. That number was later amended to add one female to the injured list, bringing the total to four. One person was shot by a sheriff's deputy who responded to one of the scenes, Roesler said. ... Police had staffed the parking lot and barred some people from entering because they'd heard there could be a fight following a previous fight in Grand Rapids. Authorities notified school officials and identified possible suspects. Police said the shooting suspects were told to leave the parking lot and went to an adjacent parking lot. ... ...     ... Muskegon Heights, which is a city of only ~10K, has a violent crime rate as bad as cities such as Detroit or Flint. |

Investigators say it appears that McCaleb was the only person in the incident, other than police, who had a gun. McCaleb is being charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Felony Firearm, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. According to the Muskegon County Prosecutor, McCaleb was confronted by a Muskegon Sheriff’s Deputy after the initial shooting that left three people hurt, including two Muskegon Heights students. The deputy wounded McCaleb in the confrontation. The prosecutor’s office says that the investigation so far shows the deputy took the necessary action to save his life and save others at the scene. According to detectives, McCaleb told them that he had gone to Muskegon Heights to watch the basketball game. He ran into a group of people at the game and went out to his car to get a gun. He told police that when he tried to leave the group of people ran at him and he fired shots into the crowd. |
