Impact Jacket

Anyone ever heard of one of these?  Very interesting but does it have a track record?  Is it just a gimmick? Do you wear it over your regular jacket?

Looks like SOSpenders or other brands of CO2 inflating life jackets adapted for motorcycling.  I am not sure how a balloon would do versus a concrete barrier or pole.

No safety item works in every instance... But most motorcycle accidents involve the ground and not barrier/pole impacts.

If the price is reasonable I'm probably going to get one. The extra cushion can't hurt.

I could see it helping to not let your head get thrown around,  like tha padding a linebacker wears.

But the video seems like a joke considering so many guys are just wearing vests.   Yeah protect my neck,  but if my arms get shredded by pavement thats ok!

These are made by a few different companies.  You can get them in a full jacket from Impact.  The vests, I believe, are to be worn over your regular jacket.

That makes sense.

Gimmick.  It's good that companies are trying to come up with ways to protect riders, but this isn't going to be a major life saver like vehicle airbags.

First of all, the name "impact jacket" is a misnomer.  It won't protect you from injury from impacting a light pole, telephone pole, grandma's buick, or the side of the quickie mart at 30+ mph.  It might prevent broken ribs to some extent, depending on the circumstances.

One of the biggest problems I see with it is that it will cause and/or contribute to tumbling; and if you've ever gone down on a race track or other flat surface you know the last thing you want to be doing at 50+ mph is tumbling.
