Ive never had a mosquito problem. Last night went out in yard and we were swarmed.
Besides getting rid of standing water
What can I do?  I've read that bug zappers, are agimmick. They kill non Mosquitos mostly.
Does OFF or DEET work?  Similarly I read citronella isn't effective.

It works pretty well IMO but if it rains you will need to re-apply.

Yeah, it does a pretty good job but wears off fairly quickly after a rain.  And once it rains, more mosquito eggs hatch.  I have found that Spectracide Triazicide works pretty well on them too.  Have used Malathion before, but it is hard to find now.

Here in South Louisiana mosquitoes are pretty bad, we use just about anything we can get that works.

Believe it or not bats are your friend.
You can buy bat houses like this and place them in trees or on your house.

A single brown bat can eat up to 600 mosquitoes in one hour!

Thermacell is great for short term use.  I love mine and won't go in the woods hunting or fishing without it.  However, it doesn't cover large areas and can get expensive for long term use.

OP, you have a couple of options that last a few weeks at a time.

1)  Call companies such as Mosquito Squad.  They spray/fog your property with a Pyrethrin based insecticide that kills mosquitos and prevents larva from hatching.  Lasts from 3 weeks to 2 months depending on rain fall.  Groupon usually has deals with local companies, $49 for 3 months worth of service.  See any mosquitos or no seem-ums?  Call and they come out and respray, free.  Works great!

2) Get a pump sprayer, backpack sprayer works best.  I have a 4 gallon sprayer.  Buy a product called Cross Check.  Mix 1 oz per gallon of water, mix well.  Spray your yard, all of it.  Be sure to spray trees, wooded areas, shade areas etc...  This is the same active ingredient used by the pros mentioned above.  It is also the same active ingredient used by exterminators for several other pests.  It lasts for 3 months.  Only difference is it doesn't have a larvacide so you may have to respray sooner than 3 months.  This product works great too!  It is what I use on my partially wooded acre surrounding the house.

FYI:  Cross Check can be purchased online or at Lesco.  It is safe for indoor and outdoor use.  Once dried, it is safe around kids and pets.  It will kill roaches, fire ants, black carpenter ants, gnats, midges, spiders, mosquitos, ticks, redbugs, crickets, black field crickets (destructive little bastards), scorpions and a host of other nasty, bothersome pests.

Great stuff!!

I've had very good results with a Beyer product that connects to your hose. I can't remember the name but it comes in a grey bottle, covers up to 10,000 sq.ft., and targets many types of pests including mosquitos.

If it works on mosquitos in the great white north, its gotta be good.

This is the solution. Loved it worked as promised
Mosquito Magnet
The hardest part was waiting the 30 days it takes to break the cycle.

Thermacell and liberal application of Permethrin to your clothing.  There are other chemicals that will work good in your yard, spray your trees and bushes as well.  Nuke any standing water from orbit.

Another vote for Bug Free Back Yard, the stuff just works. The little bastards get pretty bad here in Southeast Texas.

Thanks for the helpful post. I need to get on it. This year's batch are a bunch of tiny fuckers and you end up eat-up in under 5 minutes.

I spray my yard with Demon WP, comes in handy little packets that you mix with one gallon water and spray anywhere you don't want bugs. The more often it rains, the sooner you have to reapply, but I'm not aware of any product out there that doesn't wash off.
