In addition to my screen (screen not computer) freezing up or becoming distorted, and my needing to hit, shake, or squeeze it to unfreeze the screen; it is now also has a line running vertically down it. Also, part of the screen has become magnatized! How do I demagnatize it?

Get a new monitor. They're cheap.

With the amount of time you spend in front of it, you shouldn't be putting up with that crap.

Is your screen an LCD?
Yes, I have been told that it may be a ribbon cable.

My guess is that some malfunctioning software caused your OS to hard lock.

Instead of ending task on the offending software, you smacked your screen until the software finished the lockup.

Once the lockup had past, you ASSumed that the smacks had resolved the problem.

Your screen has now undergone one too many lockup/smack cycles and is displaying vertical lines of dead pixels.

PBKAC I'm afraid.
No fix for it until they rollout user2.0
