Many many moons ago you guys talked me into going to Firefox for the go-to browser and leaving IE in the dust. I did just that,

Somehow my IE icon just went away several months ago and I hardly noticed it.

NOW, I might have to work from home and I will be on-call next week. One of the 4 programs I have installed to allow me to work from home REQUIRES IE to run and it's the most critical one of them all.

Now, when I go to the IE icon in the program folder, it starts to load then immediately goes to the "That page cannot be found"

I've set IE to the default, installed IE 7 and it still won't work. I WAS running IE 6 a while back before I quit using IE if that helps.

It sounds like the icon you are clicking on isn't connected to the copy of IE you just installed.  Check its properties by right-clicking on it, and see if the path is correct.  I'll bet it isn't.

Try going Start, Run, and typing in iexplore.exe.  That should work.

OTOH it's not clear to me that IE didn't start.  Maybe your home page is just set to something invalid.

If IE is running, then within IE go Tools, Internet Options, and set the home page to https://www.ar15.com.

Tried that, got this message:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

  Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

  What you can try:
Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to make sure you are connected.

    Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

Go into Tools, Internet Options, Connections and Lan and make sure you don't have a proxy server set.  If so, clear it.

You should probably upgrade to IE8.

Use your "Windows Update" from the start menu to go find it.

That will probably put it back on your desktop.

You are getting "page can not be displayed" from whatever site your IE is set to access when you first start it.  Ignore that.  Go to Google or AR15.com by typing in the address bar.

Please do not use IE6.  That incestuous whore needs to be eliminated.

Just install the Firefox add-on "IE tabs". That will open IE tabs inside Firefox.

Try....

Start ––-> Programs ––––> Accessories ––––> System Tools  ––––>  Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

Your system32 folder is defective.  You need to delete it.

Then try running ie right from the Program Files folder.  Also check to see if it's set to auto-detect your LAN settings.  That's what I have mine set at, anything else screws it up.

Thanks a bunch for all of the tips and help, guys. This is what it was. It was set to proxy. I unchecked it and I'm finally able to work from home.

If you need the IE icon back on the desktop, use REGEDIT:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]

"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000000

and the icon will reappear.  To get rid of the icon, change the dword value to 00000001
