I am building a 1/48 scale F-106. How do I mask the black nose pattern. So far I have put masking tape on the nose(I have already painted the rest of the plane gray).
How on earth do I get a curve from cockpit to nose that looks halfway correct and sharply defined.
Google F-106 if you are unfamiliar with the nose pattern.

you should be able to find some very thin (width) tape at a residential paint store that you can curve to the shape needed.

There are multiple ways.  First, should you decide to use tape, try a thin tape like Tamiya tape. It is much easier to mask curves with thinner tape, ie. less than 1/4" wide. Another way is to use a masking agent like liquid mask. Or you could use something like play-doh or silly putty. I like the silly putty.  Hope it works. If you need any help, pm me.

+1 on Tamiya tape.

I have a bunch of thin, very flexible tape.  It was used by newspapers for add layouts before they were done on computers.  You might try slicing your masking tape to about 1/8 inch thick and taping the line.

If you don't have any go get some Tamiya tape now. No, it is not the same as the house paint masking tape sitting next to you. Trust me.

Then you can bend it to shape using panel lines and other 'landmarks' along the way to make it match.

Or you can take a piece of tape and draw the curve on it, cut the tape along the curve, and then just slap it on. To make the other side match just use the first one as a pattern.

There are several ways to do it. If you get really desperate you can mask the curve with individual 1/16" pieces of tape. Turning each just little bit to make the curve. Paint, then go back with an uber fine brush and touch up the outside edge.

So I'm getting I should try to mask a line instead of (basically)covering the nose in Tamiya masking tape and cutting the pattern.

Correct?

Any distributor that sells automotive paint/bodywork supplies will have fine-line masking tape. It's made to work around curves, such as when masking flames or other graphics. Works like a charm!

I don't know if I would cut on the plastic.

I was thinking you pull a strip of tape and put it down on your worktable (I use an old pane of glass for sticking masking tape to). Then draw the line on the masking tape. It will probably take a few tries, you might even make some cursory measurements of the model (I want it this long and to curve this much at such and such point, just really basic). Once you have a line drawn that looks satisfactorily then just cut it with your hobby knife. Use a sharp blade. Lightly stick it to the model, maybe trim it up just a little. Then lay it down on top of another piece of tape and draw the same line. Cut that one too and stick them both on. I use a burnishing tool to make sure it is stuck completely so paint won't run.

OR

Tape the entire nose area. Use a marker or pen to draw you curve on the tape. Peel tape off. Cut along line. Put tape back on.

Just my .02. I shoot EVERYTHING on my planes. So it takes a lot of masking. My favorite part. I spend whole evenings masking just to shoot paint for a few seconds.

I used Tamiya masking tape and laid out the curve and shot it with black spraypaint. I got a good result.

Thanks guys.
