The U.S. government has alerted airlines and law enforcement agencies that new intelligence indicates that Islamic terrorists have smuggled shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles into the United States. Classified intelligence reports circulated among top Bush administration policymakers during the past two weeks identified the missiles as Russian-made SA-7 surface-to-air missiles or U.S.-made Stinger anti-aircraft missiles obtained covertly in Afghanistan, said intelligence officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Authorities are looking for three types of "manpads," or man-portable, air-defense systems, including SA-7s and Stingers, the officials said. The SA-7s have a range of more than 3 miles and can hit aircraft flying at 13,500 feet. Stinger missiles can hit aircraft flying at 10,000 feet and 5 miles away. The FBI sent out an intelligence alert two weeks ago warning about the missiles. The officials said the warning is based on intelligence and not a specific threat that the missiles are in the United States. "We don't have information that al Qaeda is planning to use these against commercial aircraft in the United States," an FBI official said. "However, we are passing the information along for people to remain alert to the potential use." The official said an FBI intelligence alert was sent to law-enforcement authorities about two weeks ago and that airlines were notified on May 22. As a result of the "recent apparent targeting of U.S.-led military forces in Saudi Arabia, law-enforcement agencies in the United States should remain alert to potential use of manpads against U.S. aircraft," the FBI said. Other intelligence officials spoke of concerns that the missiles had been smuggled into the United States. Senior Pentagon officials also were briefed recently on the threat posed by shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles smuggled into the United States. |

Officials said the intelligence reports followed the discovery earlier this month of an empty SA-7 launcher near a desert base used by U.S. air forces in Saudi Arabia. The launcher was found by Saudi security police near Prince Sultan Air Base, near Riyadh, the Saudi capital.
The Saudis could not determine whether the launcher had fired a missile, and they destroyed it before U.S. military or intelligence officials could examine it. One official said that intelligence report was given credence by Abu Zubaydah, the al Qaeda organization's operations chief, who was captured in Pakistan in March and who has been providing information about the terrorist group. A U.S. official also said the portable missiles, which can be carried in small crates, "are fairly light and not difficult to obtain on the gray market." "It's conceivable that terrorists could get them," the official said. "It is one of a number of possible threats that we need to be mindful and concerned about." Officials said another worry was an interview in an Arabic-language newspaper with a senior al Qaeda terrorist. Abd-al-Azim al-Muhajir, a senior commander, told a reporter for London's Al-Sharq al Awsat in Pakistan last week that the terrorist group is planning a major attack against the United States. Al-Muhajir said U.S. military operations in Afghanistan have "changed the nature of the action in the field, media appearances and training centers." However, he insisted, al Qaeda is not "finished." Asked about new attacks against the United States, al-Muhajir said: "We pray to God, the glorified and exalted, to help us in the coming stage, that is the 'guerrilla warfare,' and in dealing with the aircraft. Thanks be to God that we have taken big strides in this." Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at the Pentagon that U.S. military forces are on alert for attacks by portable missiles. "We take very seriously the fact that our opponents do have surface-to-air missiles, shoulder-fired surface-to-air-missiles," Gen. Pace said. "And we take precautions on the ground and in the air any time we have our aircraft arriving or departing." He said there were no reports of U.S. aircraft taking surface-to-air missile fire in Saudi Arabia after the discovery of the SA-7 launcher. "That does not mean it was not fired; it simply means we do not know if that particular weapon was fired at that location or simply dropped off there," he said. |

Damn,
I'll be flying this weekend to New Orleans. What can you do. I'm really not worried. But some airplane may get shot down. Anyone remember Flight 800 out of Kennedy Airport ? There were reports that some people saw a missle fired from the ground and an explosion when it hit. These were eye witnesses. No they were conspirators !!! They made it up. |

I haven't flown for nearly two years.
Just got back from a business trip. Here is my advice to you. Lot has changed since 9/11. I didn't see national guards with M16 walking around. But security is still tight. 1) Carry your driver's license or passport with you. You probably have to show your ID at least 3 times before getting on the plane. 2) Wear clean pair of socks. Some people at the airport were ordered to remove their shoes for closer inspection. 3) Don't carry any metallic objects while you walk through the metal detector. If you set that thing off, you'll be hassled for like 5 minutes. 4) Arrive 2 hours before the flight if flying domestic. I don't know about the international flights. 5) If someone is picking you up at the airport, have that person park it in the parking area. Cops were really strict about people parking vehicles in front of the building. |

I want one!
@#%& it, one of the most heart-rending images to come out of Afghanistan was of a NA gunman sitting on a T-55 with an RPG-7 and a backpack full of rockets. I want a backpack full of rockets! But I can't, because I live in the freest nation on earth. |

Interesting how few people in the media are willing to tell the truth, that these missiles are neither American made Stingers or Russian SA-7's, but in reality ChiCom HN-5's MANPADS. The HN-5 being the ChiCom copy of the Russian SA-7 Strella AAM.
Of course we can't call a ChiCom Missle a Chicom missle, THAT MIGHT UPSET CHINA!!! The burning Question is...Are the missiles, we think, are being smuggled into the U.S. by these terrorists, The same missiles China shipped over to the Taliban AFTER 9-11? |

Maybe they're just staunch RKBA supporters, you know - shoulder-fired missles should be protected by the 2nd Amendment right?
What's y'alls problem? |

Time to take the Washington Post off of the circulation list for classified intelligence reports. Either that or just give up and print all of the classified reports in the Washington Post and make it required reading for the staff. This warning was the most useless yet. Next warning: Someone, somewhere has some sort of weapon that we have no evidence will be used against us domestic or abroad on high, medium, or low profile targets. Keep an eye out for them though. |

I'm worried about the space shuttle being a target. Losing another crew would be devastating (personally and nationally). Losing a shuttle would end the program. Losing my job (directly crew and shuttle related) would end my families ability to consume food and live in a house. Terrorism and terrorists suck.

Here is the Fox new report: WASHINGTON — The FBI told police departments an empty launcher for a shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile found near a military base in Saudi Arabia was linked to Al Qaeda, but cautioned there were no signs terrorists planned to fire on U.S. commercial jetliners. Instead, the FBI indicated it believes Al Qaeda may try to use such weapons against U.S.-led military forces in the region. The FBI message, marked "law enforcement sensitive," noted that U.S. planes have used the Prince Sultan Air Base, south of the Saudi capital Riyadh, since the 1991 Gulf War. The FBI said Thursday it was unknown how long the missile tube had been there before its discovery by Saudi soldiers about three weeks ago. The FBI sent the message May 22 urging state and local police departments to remain vigilant, but cautioned there was no hint of any attack plot. "We have no information to indicate Al Qaeda is planning to use any type of missile or weapons systems against commercial aircraft in the U.S.," the bulletin said. Saudi security guards at the base found the 4-foot-long launcher for a Soviet-made SA-7 missile about two miles from the nearest runway, inside the base's outer perimeter fence and near an inner fence. A cover on the front of the launch tube was intact, but there were scorch marks on the back of the tube, indicating it could have been used to fire or try to fire a missile. The discovery puzzled and worried U.S. military officials. No pilots reported seeing, hearing or detecting any missiles, and officials said there were no reports of any threats against the air base. About 4,500 U.S. troops and an unspecified number of American warplanes use the desert base. View Quote |

Here something else for a few dumbasses to think about here:
http://www.worldtribune.com/worldtribune/breaking_7.html Iran training Palestinians in use of surface-to-air missiles Iran has launched a training program to instruct Palestinian militants in the use of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles. Western intelligence sources said the training is taking place in Lebanon and is being conducted for Palestinian allies of the Iranian-backed Hizbullah. The sources said members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command as well as Hamas and Fatah members are being instructed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the use of SA-7 surface-to-air missiles. The program is seen as the prelude to a campaign to shoot down Israeli combat aircraft, Middle East Newsline reported. The sources said Israeli and U.S. intelligence agencies have determined that the training is the first step toward the Iranian supply of anti-aircraft missiles to the Palestinians. They said supporters of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat have also received training. The Berlin-based Die Welt daily said the training has been conducted in the Bekaa Valley near the Syrian border. The newspaper said at least 20 Palestinians are being trained in a course headed by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Brig. Gen. Ali Reza Tamizr. View Quote Oh, here is one more: U.S.: Saudi militants have obtained SA-7 missiles http://www.worldtribune.com/worldtribune/breaking_7.html The United States has acknowledged that Islamic insurgents in Saudi Arabia have acquired anti-aircraft weapons meant to down U.S. warplanes. Officials said Saudi insurgents, believed linked to Al Qaida, have acquired Soviet-origin surface-to-air missiles. They said the insurgents are seeking to down a U.S. warplane in the kingdom in an effort to terminate the American military presence. Earlier this month, Saudi security forces found an SA-7 missile tube outside Prince Sultan Air Base, Middle East Newsline reported. The base is regard as the main command and control center for U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf. Officials said they still have not determined who brought the anti-aircraft weapon to the base. But they said the U.S. military has ordered measures to protect U.S. planes deployed in Saudi Arabia from a missile attack. Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he could not rule out that the SA-7 was fired at a U.S. plane. He said insurgents might have dropped the missile tube outside the air base. "Regardless, we take very seriously the fact that that our opponents do have surface-to-air missiles, shoulder-fired surface-to-air-missiles," Pace said on Thursday. "And we take precautions on the ground and in the air any time we have our aircraft arriving or departing." Officials said that after a month of investigation the U.S. military has not been provided with answers regarding who is behind the SA-7 episode. They said that so far Saudi authorities have not found any significant leads. View Quote |
