My MSE is giving me a notification (red flag - potentially unprotected) that I need an update, but when I attempt to update it (this has been going on for 3 days now) I get an error and popup that says: Virus and spyware definations update failed.  MSE wasn't able to check for virus and spyware definition updates.  Make sure your computer is connected to the internet and try again.  ETA: I should mention that it seems to get about 95% of the update done before failing.  There is a green progress bar that fills up and it gets to the same point every time.

I am connected fine.  Something seems wrong on their end.  Anyone know what to do?

Anyway, make sure all the system services that the program uses are enabled or activated.

Try running Windows Update (from within IE) and see if that works.

easiest is to just re-download MSE.  I've had good luck with MSE so far.

Isn't MSE free?

Mine wouldn't update the other day and got a message that I had to purchase a license.  I uninstalled and went with Avast, system runs faster now.

hunting around in the MSE panel, it says that "Virus & spyware definitions haven't been updated for at least 7 days."

However, I have it set to update and scan daily.

It also says: "Virus & spyware definitions: Connection failed"

What's up?

I was running it for a bit, but a virus got through. So i ditched it and went back to Avast free.

Nothing wrong wit throwing Malwarebytes on that computer and keep it updated once a month. Its free and does not run all the time. Its just there if you need it to kick a bad bug out of your machine.

that happened to be over the last couple of days.  the reason was a virus that was preventing from getting the update.  you can get the update here...http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx and install it manually

Wait.  A virus in my machine or a virus at Microsoft where the download was coming from?

I re-installed, updated and scanned with MSE and it found nothing.   I also have Malwarebytes and it, too, found nothing on my machine.  You have me worried now.
