I'm no whirlybird driver, but isn't that kind of an inches from death scenario?

All cultures are equal. And yeah, this is gonna make someone here mad.

My first hand experience as a passenger with chopping a few palm fronds off while hovering was that the level of shaking and vibrating is eye opening. As was the sudden and violent maneuver away from the palm tree. Nearly in the dirt. Interesting day. |

Bunch of astronauts in this thread think Americans don’t wreck the shit out of helicopters. |

Miscalculated bank angle, at too low altitude. |

Those blades have replaceable tip caps, the outboard 12-18 inch tip cap costs about $12k each and are easy to swap for just this purpose.
Those blades are about $120k each. Tip caps are very lightweight, not much vibration when they’re blown up. Makes a lot of noise though - blade tips are moving near supersonic. The tip caps are commonly called curb feelers. |

The few hueys I've been in, the pilots could fly and land damn near anywhere.

View Quote Assuming they follow the same maintenance procedures that we do, that will result in a blade strike/sudden stoppage inspection. The last one of those that I did on an Apache that chopped off the top 4ft of a tree resulted in the replacement of three blades, all 8 blade pins, all 4 center pins, all 4 lead/lag links, the removal of all driveshafts for inspection of the shafts and mounting holes, and borescope of both engines. It took about 4 days. |
