I know this question belongs in the armory section, but I am hopeing that it will get a better response here. I have a Marlin lever action 45-70 guide gun with the 18" ported barrell. One of my friends hunted with this gun this past weekend and decided that he wants to buy one for himself. He called me today saying that he had been to several gun shops in the area, and that all of the Marlin Guide Guns he looked at did not have the ported barrell. I looked on Marlin's website and noticed that the ported barrell is not mentioned anywhere on the website. Does marlin still offer the ported barrell as a factory option? Also, how much of a difference does having the ported barrell make as far as recoil and follow up shots make? (I have never shot one with out a ported barrell) Thanks |

Marlin dropped the factory porting years ago, about the same time they quit drilling and tapping for the side mount sights (Lyman and Williams) this all happened shortly after the stainless guns were introduced, there are a few stainless ported guns but not many. I have one of each, the porting is a non issue, the ported gun gives up a few foot per second, the ported gun has less muzzle jump and either will blind you when fired in non daylight hours |
