I have some time off and figured it's time for some Spring cleaning.  I have a bunch of DVD's sitting on my shelves that I've always wanted to rip on to my computer and clear up book space.  I'd like to save the movies and stash the DVD's away in some box in the attic.

What's the best quality?  Takes up less HD space?  Most common format?  Best software?

I don't really do the whole ripping thing and I know my questions are so beginner.

Handbrake is the best program I've found so far and there IS a lot of shit out there.

I'm going off memory here since it's been a few months but I think I've been using H.264 for video and AAC for audio with good results playing back via Xbox Media Player on my consoles or VLC and Windows Media Player on my computer.

It takes a bit of trial and error to get your settings just right for the combination of size and quality that you want.  I'd do a couple runs with the same DVD and compare different settings until you are happy.  Also make sure to test on a few different devices before you commit to ripping the rest of your disks so you don't have to go back and redo it.

Another thing to think about is if you want 5.1 surround sound or not.  One interesting thing that I ran into is that I had to encode my movies with both a 5.1 track AND a 2.0 track in order to playback correctly on both devices that had surround sound and ones that did not.

Okay, I downloaded and installed MakeMKV, and I can't convert my BluRay disc ... it just says "No Disc" when I insert the BluRay disc.

What am I doing wrong? Is it because my DVD drive doesn't recognize BluRay? If so, how do you get around that?

I just want to convert the BluRay to conventional DVD so I can watch it on a non-BluRay player.

Unless you have a blue ray drive in your computer your BR disks won't read.

Eta: The blue ray drives are basically the same as an internal DVD drive so swapping it is easy. I think you can get a blue ray drive that also writes dvds, it's been a long time since i looked around and those sort of things.  You will also need software that can read blue ray disks.

Yeah, just read up on that, and I don't have one, so I guess this is never mind.
