Johnny Jr was assigned the topic in his history class of what sort of fare the Civil War soldiers would have been eating while on campaign.

So, he's going to be bringing in some hardtack for everyone to try.  If given a bit more warning, we probably could have included some salt pork.

2 cups flour
3/4 cup water
1/2 tbsp salt

Nom, nom, nom, <tooth crack>, ouch!

Still in the oven.

250 for four hours.

Here's a substitute pic in the meantime.

Looks tasty, eh?

Didn't that stuff get banned for warfare by the Geneva convention?  Too inhumane.

We made a batch years ago when he was in elementary school.

It was challenging to eat.

Interesting though.

I add some Crisco,  make it every time I go backpacking,  one of my favorite foods.  Course as the son of a reanactor I was raised on it.

Wouldn't that shorten the lifespan of it by adding fat?

Adding cisco to the recipe, does it make it softer or just add to the taste? I want to make some up one of these days.

I miss reenacting. That was pretty neat to do....& expensive!

You're not supposed to really eat it as-is.  Or jerky either for that matter, although you can both.

You use them as ingredients to cook something else.

I must be retarded, I always thought hardtack was a form of pemmican or jerky.

Very little nutrition in hardtack. White flour blows.

Check this stuff out if you really need long haul non-perishable sustenance...

Jun 22, 2008 ... Logan Bread Recipe. Logan bread is a dense quick bread full of dried fruits and nuts. Named after Mount Logan in the Yukon, Logan Bread's delicious taste, high calorie content, indestructibility, and non-perishability make it an ideal long distance backpacking food.

Soak it in soup and it eventually turns into bread. Kind of.

I'm glad I wasn't born in that time period.

Adding fat can make it go rancid over time.  Time permitting, soldiers would fry their bacon and then put the hardtack into the bacon grease to make it more palatable.

Hardtack is a way to preserve food not really something designed to be eaten "raw". Usually soaked in water, milk, soup, coffee, etc and then fried in grease, butter or oil.

Hardtack is not delicious, but it is filling. It will sustain you for the short term.

Didn't they typically break it up into broth to make a kind of soup?

edit: oops, see others posted the same.

I made a batch every year back when I hunted hard......And had stronger teeth.

LOL...I left a half-eaten piece in a tree stand one evening. I hunted the same stand the next afternoon. I heard this odd noise and it was a squirrel working on the piece of HT I left behind. It sounded like he was cutting a hickory nut. He made short work of it though.

Use lard, not Crisco.

Use fresh ground whole wheat, not white flour and it adds considerable nutrition.

As mentioned, not intended to be eaten as is.

Same as parched corn and jerk.
