Knew a guy I worked with at Dell that imported a woman from the Ukraine.  He was a decent looking guy, a little nerdy... his wife was pretty dang good looking... PROBABLY out of his league if she were American.  They have a couple kids.

The thought crossed my mind, but I'm not financially where I would want to be to look for a woman abroad.  Sure, I have read nomarriage.com, and believe that the sentiment about American women is very true, but not universal.  There ARE some good women here, but they are few and far between.

I worked for a guy who married one from Russia.  She was sweet enough, and he seemed to like her and is a decent guy himself.  That was 3 years ago, and they'd been married for two years and still are.  I think it's lasted longer than his other two marriages to American women.

ETA: They raise 'em right in Russia, too; that gal was hard working.

Yeah, isn't that the truth. I've never visited that site before just now, but a lot of what I just read REALLY hits home.

I'm very single, and likely to stay that way for a while. I do not think with my dick, ever, and have actively refused to get married based on knowing someone for only a few months... result? I'm alone, but I've dodged several fatal bullets.

I would actually really, really, really like to find a nice wife at some point in the future, but I don't hold out much hope. Women complain about men wanting supermodels... that's friggin' peanuts compared to what they've been raised to want and how they've been raised to behave by pop culture.

As the song goes, though, the owner of a lonely heart is much better than the owner of a broken heart. I'd rather spend my life alone than with someone I can't stand.

Far as the topic, the nicest I've EVER been treated was by a British girl I knew who moved here. Good lord what a nice lady. A couple German women I've known were also refreshingly non-self absorbed and not full of ridiculous demands and wearing personality facades. Maybe there's something to getting a woman from the old world after all. I don't know. I wouldn't ever go the mail order bride route though, that's just... weird.

Most mail-order brides are just in it so they can get into the US legally. They bail as soon as they can stay legally without the husband.

Some simply want to marry an American and to live the American dream. These relationships usually last.

A handful are actually part of a sexual slavery scheme. The young woman (or her parents if she's underaged) is tricked into going massively in debt to the slavers, and to pay off her debt she gets sold as someone's concubine. This is pretty rare and generally the "husbands" are actually in on the scheme. Usually the poor girl doesn't speak a word of english, is never allowed to leave the house, and is threatened if she ever tries to run away. The handful of incidents of this happening every year usually get imported from Canada, of all places (Eastern European or Asian girl gets brought into Canada, then snuck into the US illegally).

I placed these in the order of likelihood.

And now, some humor:
A mail-order bride arrived in the US and waited for her husband to pick her up. She knew he was a farmer, but otherwise didn't know much about him. He showed up, picked up her bags, and led her out to a horse-pulled wagon, all without saying a word. Nervous, she didn't say anything either.

As they turned off the pavement onto the dirt road leading to the farm, the horse stopped and refused to go any further. The farmer got down, looked the horse in the eye, and said, "That's one." When he got back on the wagon, the horse moved again.

A mile down the road, the horse stopped again and refused to move. The farmer climbed down again, looked the horse in the eye, and said, "That's two." He climbed back on and the horse resumed walking. By now, the mail-order bride was confused, but she was still too nervous to ask what that was all about.

A couple miles down the road, the horse stopped again and refused to move. The farmer got down, pulled out a gun, and shot the horse in the head, killing it instantly. He then grabbed his bride's bags and began walking. Confused and horrified, she followed, and finally found her voice.

"Why did you shoot the horse?"

He stopped and looked her in the eye.

"That's one."

I know a 20something from Ukraine that my sister introduced me to. She thought my room was some sort of private military museum She was a very smart and good looking girl with a good head on her shoulders. Not exactly mail order but girls from the Ukraine seem just like girls from Montana but with a different accent. She also talked about going bear hunting in the Ukraine with a Mosin

YMMV. I'd NEVER heard of a Russian bride working out well.. thought they were all scams. Lots of those on the Entirenet.

I guy I worked with had a very pretty Philipina he was trying to get into the country. He'd spent a couple of years and about $10K thus far. And he'd known her 2 weeks before marrying her! This guy was a doofus, had a strange-looking mouth (deformed at birth, mind you) and talked funny. But he loved that girl. He moved to another job before she got to the US.

Another guy (friend of mine) got a nice Philipina girl. Same story, many $Ks and a 2-year wait to get her into the country. HIS marriage seems to have worked out well. ONE THING TO REMEMBER: If you marry a Philipina, you adopt her entire family: siblings, parents, cousins, etc.

An older friend (60s, early 70s or so) had a German war bride. Love the hell out of her. And she gave me a new perspective on the US bombing of Iran... you must talk to someone who has withstood the bombing to understand.

In fact, most of the guys who actually get their brides into the country end up pretty happy with them. Just beware of the scammers.

One of the guys in my office has one here on an engagement visa right now, he's the laughing stock of the office whenever he's not around.  Apparently its his third mail-order bride, but the other two were before I started here so I dont know the details.  She's from Russia, ~22yo, he's 42.

He's already come to me asking how he would go about recording every keystroke he made on his computer and another coworker reported he was thinking of sending her back because she wouldnt stop asking for money.

He called Verizon to get his TV hooked up, and wanted to know if they could give him only the Russian channels (he never watches TV).  They said no, he'd have to get basic cable and the Russian channels, so he wanted to know if they could block Oprah, Ricky Lake, etc.  The lady on the phone apparently said he could parental control them and he began discussing the details of how you do that, while everyone in a 3 cube radius was laughing their asses off.  He then asked me to write down a list of all the man-hating shows and networks.

Ukrainian women are niiiice. There's a mail-order Ukrainian at work - very attractive 45 yo. Actually, her husband went over there and met her before he married and brought her back. She went through some type of agency.  It gave me the thought that a bunch of wealthy old men show up and walk down the line to find the one they like

Knew an older guy in a church group that everyone loved.
His wife died of cancer so he was lonely and ordered a mail order bride from the Phillipines. She did'nt speak a lick of English. After awhile he started having difficulties with her and one night evidently they got into a major fight.
He went to bed and while he was asleep she hacked him 36 times with a meat cleaver.
Needless to say it was a closed casket funeral.he

A woman I knew was married to a guy who started shopping for his next wife from Russia while they were still married.  He even went to Russia, got her pregnant, came home divorced his wife and then began proceedings to bring her over. They have been together for like 6-7 years and she doesnt work and doesn't speak a lot of english. I think its the "keep them confined" treatment. Appears to work for him at least.

Don't have any experience with mail order brides or know anyone who has done it.

But, I'm ex-military, and live in a military town. I see a lot of servicemen go abroad and marry a foreign girl.

Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it's really bad.

I met my wife when I was in China, but I knew her for about three years before popping the subject of marriage. Five years later, we're married and she has her citizenship.

After 9/11, it is a major pain in the ass to work with INS or the USCIS.

My only advice is, if you marry a foreign wife and don't really know her, have a prenup signed.

I don't know much about 'mail order', but about online dating of overseas women.. there are plenty of Chinese to go around.  most seem very nice, some speek english better then you'll ever speak chinese.  but the drawback is that the older they are, the more likely they are to have kids.   as here, or maybe more likely there, men don't want to be raising another mans children, so you'll see lots of single moms .  YMMV

Similar to all the Russian & Chinese kids that Americans adopt?

A buddy of mine & his wife adopted two Russian kids several years ago.  He's told me that basically you are 'buying' them when you adopt them.  He & his wife had to smuggle tens of thousands of dollars hidden in money belts to pay for them.
