I bought one off of Amazon a while back. Don't remember the name but it had a Cree chip in it.

seems to work just fine.

Skip it and go right to DX for something that uses 18650's.

You'll spend less, you'll have better batteries, and it will be brighter.

Another vote for this option.  I got a Malkoff P7 (5-12V) and a 12V regulated 8 AA battery holder made by Willie Hunt for my otherwise unmodified 2D Maglite in 2009.  Awesome setup!

Is there very much battery drain with the Malkoff while not in use?

But maglites have enough gravity in em to make decent beat down sticks...Or an improvised dildo.

There is no battery drain when they are turned off.

With the current gen of multi-mode Maglites, such as the ML300LX, there is not much reason to upgrade an old one like there was a few years ago.  If you have a bunch and want to keep them for nostalgia / member berries, a cheap, $14, low power draw LED drop in such as TerraLux TLE-6 series is about as much money as I could justify dropping into an old Mag and will double its lumen output while tripling its runtime.

Works great in my 4 D cell Mag.

If you really want a light that blinds people with the old school alkaline thing, I used to make people maglites with these modules, except I got the single mode ones.

They aren't exactly drop in though, it requires about 40 minutes of tinkering and some modifications to the switch assembly.

$40 for one converter?  I could buy 2-3 complete LED flashlights for that.

Run a search and see if lowes will be doing black friday maglight led deals.

I have not gone for a couple years but for a few years in a row I would buy 3 or 4 and give them as gifts and what not.  I would always keep one or two for me and through the year give them to someone when out at a hunting camp or something.

I like malkoff, but figure depending on what you want and price wise it may not be worth it.

I keep a 4-cell under the flip-up console top in the truck.
I don't even know if the batteries are any good; I haven't turned it on in about a year. I have a little surefire in the truck if I need a light...

Can someone explain why I would spend $40 upgrading my 3D maglight to a 300 lumen LED when I can buy a 650 lumen 3D LED flashlight for $20?  I love my maglight and would enjoy a it being brighter but I rather just buy two brighter flashlights to begin with.

Because people like the familiar. Even if it is antiquated.

Making the jump to budget 18650 lights and a pile of decent batteries is the best move anyone can do for regular use lights.

I rotate them out of my truck and into the house to make sure the batteries are always having a fresh charge. They will create light for days on the lower settings.

I understand.  I would prefer to keep my maglights as well.  Why can't the conversion kits put out the same light as the cheap $20 Tractor Supply lights?  I have both a 3 cell C and a 3 cell D LED from them and they are awesome.  I have one that takes 4 AA batteries and would be about the size of a 1 D maglight.  It puts out as much light as the 3 D conversion.  If I find a 700 lumen 3 and 4 D maglight conversion for under $40 I am in.

That was the main reason I had maglights when I was younger.  They make a great hammer too, such as when your battery terminals become corroded all you get is click-click-click when trying to start the car in the middle of winter in a parking lot.  A hammer and gun are much more effective now days.  I still have maglights but they never get used.

Apparently (according to candle power forums when I used to frequent there) Maglite is a pain right in the ass when it comes to aftermarket stuff, they have shut down people in the past for selling custom lights and custom internals.

I am genuinely surprised that drop ins aren't available for them from China, it doesn't take much work to mod them though with the modules available.

Part of it is probably their cost to profit ratio. Those lights are probably dirt cheap to produce, so they want to keep moving as many stock lights as possible.

Honestly I don't see the value in them if you aren't into modding them. Cheaper lights with better batteries blow them right out of the water. The mag lite is basically like continuing to use a corded rotary phone when smart phones are cheap and easy to find.

I don't know why, but it's hard to find powerful lights off the shelf in the US. If you want to experiment with new lights I highly recommend visiting deal extreme and ordering a few, they make them with all different battery set ups. You can get a hell of a light for not a lot of money. I have piles of them, I usually order a bunch of high rated pocket lights to hand out around Christmas time, people love them.

There are cases where having a nice large light is handy.

I have always been happy with the maglight led lights, 2 and 3 d size, that lowes puts on sale for black friday.

I have not really messed with conversions for the old maglights and I pretty much passed my old incandescent maglights on to folks who had cheap incandescent lights, those really cheap junky plastic things at dollar store or something.

Anyway, when at big campouts and stuff a maglight is great to let someone borrow cause they forgot their light.  Or can't find their light.  Or whatever.  No one just sticks a maglight in their pocket and forgets about it.  The next morning someone sees the electric blue colored maglight, or the pink one, and says hey I bet that belongs to biere cause he said when someone trips over it in the morning to bring it back so he can loan it out again tonight.

I usually kept one in the jeep or truck as well, but it was for when at big gatherings and what not.  My small super bright light, be it cheap or expensive, was for my use.

Maglight, for loaning out.

Simple question?  why would you want to keep such a bulky device when the new tech is so very, very good?
You can get the same light out of a flashlight that is nearly pencil sized.

Yup. With an LED Maglite in an overhand weak side grip you can illuminate someone and simultaneously be prepared to deliver powerful blows from a metal club loaded with C or D cells.

All the lumens and "strike bezels" in the world won't accomplish that with a 6 inch tube full of CR123s.

I carry an LED Maglite on night shift patrol. I also have a light on my gun and a handheld SureFire with the grommet as a back up. Maglite gets used the most by far.
