Hi,

My husband has a PowerBook G4 17".  The OS is 10.3.9, processor is 1GHz PowerPC G4, 1MB L3 cache, Memory = 1GB DDR SDRAM.

He just bought Leopard v10.5, ilife & Logic Pro.  When I pop in the Leopard, it reads as "Mac OS X Install DVD SL"  on the desktop.  I guess it does not have auto run like my PC?  I open it & click install then restart.  After it restarts, nothing appears to be changed.  Right now, it has a blue desktop background.  Hubby says it should turn purple & when I click "about this mac" it should reflect the update. It does not.

I try to install the ilife.  I receive a message like unable to mount (I closed that window) & it took about 4 minutes to verify.  WIth logic Pro, I see the icon on the desktop, but nothing happens when I attempt to open it.

I do not know mac's at all, I do know PC's & I am assuming same concept of installing a program?

Any assist would be very appreciated!

Thanks,

py

reboot with the dvd in and the C key held down

it will boot from the dvd and start the installer

a G4 laptop is seriously ancient these days

Intel is the modern processor of choice

I did that, nothing.  just can't figure this out.  The only other thing I can think of is this guy sold us BS disks.  When I go to You Tube, the images on their screens do not match what shows up here.

He has an HP dv9000 pavilion, it will stay on for about an hour then it shuts off.  I heard that those models heat up & something melts in them.  He is really SOL on computers!!

Reboot and hold down the option key until a screen appears with options for which disk to boot from. See if the install disk is an option.

Also, try going to system preferences, "startup disk", to see if the disk shows as an option to boot from.

Where is the option key?  Is that the letter C?

Tried to change the startup disk to boot from & nothing.

Threw the disk into my dtrs Ibook & same thing.  Nothing.  I think it will install the ilife.  I am attempting that right now.  It is about 85% complete.

The alt/option key is the second key to the left of the space bar.

If this is a Snow Leopard disk (not Leopard) it will not work on a Powerbook.

Are you sure it is not 10.6?

Ok, Right under my nose of course (I have whisky eyes right now though)!

Nope did not give me an option to change.  Only the HD showed up.

I saw take these 2 macs in the backyard & have a bonfire!!  LOL

Thank you for the assistance!  I am giving up before I really do break it!!

I printed out the instructions, it says Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.  All the paperwork printed says that or just Leopard.  I think he got burned with the disks....  He has panther 10.3.9.  Nothing I do on my own or from instruction here makes it work...

Click on the "Mac OS X Install DVD" disk mounted on the desktop.

It will show whether it is Leopard or Snow Leopard.

If it is 10.5 it should show up as a startup disk in system preferences or when holding down the option key while booting.

Is the CD an original Apple disk?

the disk could be a clone of a system install disk specific to a different model

This.

Not a retail disk maybe...

Either that, or the whisky.

The disk is yellow.  It does not have anything written on it.

The icon  on desk top shows a disk with DVD on it & Mas OS X Install DVD SL under it.

When I click the icon, I get a screen that is similar to the one above, but there are 5 files named applications, system, library, optional Installs & instructions.  There is also the black X in a circle with the green arrow pointing down Labeled Install Mac OS X.

At the top of this window it says 6 items, 27.4MB available.

PS––I don't know how to take an image off mac to show you all

It is probably an install disk from a specific machine, as posted above. Perhaps the extra files "applications, system, library" are pertinent to the specific machine.

I believe this is a screenshot of a retail Leopard disk:

10.5 system restore disks are grey and have writing on them, retail disks are black IIRC.  Sounds like you got a burned bootleg disk of some sort.

Edit:  Yep, read this.

The extra files don't even line up properly.  They seem to be randomly scattered when the window is open.

Options are Network Startup, Mac OS x 10.3.9 on Mac HD, Mac OS X on Mac OS X...all DVD SL.  I set the machine to start off the disk, but I can't tell if it did or not because nothing changes.

When I open the disk, & click the install, a new screen pops up & I am able to restart from next screen, but again, nothing.
