A couple of years ago I bought a new laptop...from the EE here, actually...and then I bought MS Office 2010 from the Microsoft website. I installed it from a download and it has worked like a charm for a while now....until just recently.
Now every time I open an MS Word, Excel or PowerPoint document, I get a little notice at the bottom of the screen saying that MS Office is downloading a feature. That's all well and good if I'm at home where I'm on the wifi, but doesn't work so well if I'm anywhere else. Word, Excel and PowerPoint won't open the document if that's the case. It doesn't matter how long or how many times I've had the program open with the wifi on, it still does it every time. I don't have any idea how to even begin to troubleshoot this or to get any kind of help from Microsoft (yeah, right). Has anyone here ever seen this before? |

Are you running Microsoft updates (not just Windows updates)? Do these documents have IRM enabled? Do you have all the latest service packs installed? I don't know about Microsoft updates, and wouldn't know how to check, but MS Office has automatic updating set up, as does Windows 7. What is IRM? |
|
IRM is Information Rights Management, it's used by people to control who sees documents and what they can do with them. Since you asked, you're probably not working with any IRM-laden documents
If you aren't on any network, what happens? It just instantly times out, it throws up an error, what? this mentions a reboot some more reading |

| As mentioned in the reboot article you linked, I restarted and then immediately opened an MS Word 2010 document. I got the same notice, but this time after just two minutes or so I finally and for the first time got a message box saying that the download had completed. Thanks RyJones. You da' man, dawg. |
| Seriously man, it was getting to the point where I was about to pay for an Office 2010 disc at work, on a discount program that still would have cost me a bunch of money, just to uninstall what I've got and install something I'd be confident would work without a damned OC192 connection. You have saved me that money and a good deal of stress, and I really appreciate it. |
