Track Coach Arrested For Sex With Students

(STNG) JOLIET, Ill. A high school track coach was arrested Tuesday on charges of having sex with a pair of student athletes, police said. Marcus Grocesley, 21, of 719 Water St., Joliet, was jailed on four counts of criminal sexual assault in connection with his trysts with the two girls.

Grocesley was an unpaid coach with the girls' track and field team and may have been a volunteer coach with the girls' basketball team as well, police said.

District Superintendent Paul Swanstrom said Tuesday he was not sure Grocesley was a coach in any capacity but said, "He certainly was not on our payroll." He said sports programs have volunteer coaches, but such personnel are certified by the IHSA. Grocesley was not certified by the IHSA, he said.

The sex Grocesley had with the teens was consensual, said Police Chief David Gerdes. Both girls are 17 now, the chief said, and one was 16 when the sex started. One girl attends Joliet Central High School and the other Joliet West, Gerdes said.

Detectives learned about Grocesley's illicit affairs from a school counselor and secured an arrest warrant, which was executed Tuesday. The warrant carries a $500,000 bond.

"Obviously, we're looking for additional information and victims," Gerdes said, encouraging anyone with information to call detectives at (815) 724-3020.

16 is legal in Alabama, and most other states too for that matter. Not sure about Illinois though. And really a 16 year old ought to be mature enough to give consent, wasn’t all that long ago that 16 year old girls were usually married. So there might not have been any real crime committed.

Doesn’t mean the guy isn’t a total scumbag though. Using your position of authority to seduce young impressionable women isn’t the kind of thing a decent man would do. Guy should probably be barred from ever coaching any sport ever again. (Democrats are looking for a Presidential candidate though.)

And the guy is only 21 too, that’s not exactly a huge age difference it’s not like he was 50 or so.

b) I dunno if I think 21 and 16 or 17 is a crime. most of the high school girls nowadays look and act like they're 30 anyway. If I had a daughter and I was somehow okay with her screwing at 17, I don't think I'd hunt down a 21 year old for banging her. Then again, I don't have a family yet.......

'Bah! Who knows, these girls may have approached and seduced him, or it could be out & out lies.

One of my college roommates was an Agricultural Education major. While he was doing his student teaching, one of his female students would write him notes and leave them on his truck. These started out fairly innocently and then got more and more provocative.

Being smarter than your average college student, he never said a word to the girl about it and handed the notes over to the principal. Just goes to show ya that 16yr old girls aren't always the victims.

I don't see any real legal issues here.

However, I don't think a High School coach should be nailing students on his team.

Although this may not be considered illegal I still think it is a bad idea to have sex with any subordinate.

It could open the school up for a law suit.

Do you think? If they are pulling a 3-way with the coach I doubt they are virgins. Still doesn't make it legal. I had a 16 YO chasing me when I was 22. I wanted to but didn't hit it. A few years later when she was in college I did.

In this particular case, it's 18. 720 ILCS 5/12-13 - victim is at least 13 but under 18, and the accused is at least 17 and held a position of trust, authority, or supervision in relation to the victim. It's a class X felony, 6-30 years mandatory prison.

The Illinois sexual abuse/assault laws are pretty complicated, in some cases the magic number is 17, but in others it's 18, such as when family members are involved or, like in this case, people in positions of trust or authority. But for your average, run of the mill "my daughter is dating an older guy" case, the age of consent is 17.

There's a key statement. The age of consent in Illinois is 17, *EXCEPT* if you are are school employee diddling a student, in which case the age of consent is 18.

Nothing illegal about that in Florida given his age and the age of the girls. However, as posted, he broke the Ill law and he's in real trouble.

FL:

A person 24 years of age or older who engages in sexual activity with a person 16 or 17 years of age commits a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084. As used in this section, "sexual activity" means oral, anal, or vaginal penetration by, or union with, the sexual organ of another; however, sexual activity does not include an act done for a bona fide medical purpose.

It appears that the age of consent in Illinois is 17, thus the guy can legitimately be charged with rape.
