No, you don't have to use the spring. In fact, I've never set one up how that picture shows. How would you typically set it up? I usually just tack the thing to a tree and run the wire to another tree, usually using the spring straightened out and attached to the wire to get a bit more length out of it. |

I don't have any springs that came with mine so would line by itself work? Does it take a lot of pressure to set one off? |

I've seen it used with the spring, but only by folks using them for the first time. Most people with experience tend to do it as said above. |

I set an artillery simulator much like that during an exercise. Ran the length of the wire down the top of a long fallen log in prep for a planned night attack against a tactical company position. The probing attacks came and went after dark - and after about 70 minutes of that goofing around I saw and heard one of my artillery sims go off on a rise 100 meters away. Story was later that the company CO, XO, 1SGT and an Lt. sat down on the log with an umpire to watch the attacks. Apparently the wire had enough stretch to not trigger. After 15 minutes the CO stood up and snagged the wire as he stood - and took out the entire command structure. Boom. |
