So I was dropping off a couple buckets of brass and some copper wire at the scrap yard today that I have been collecting at work and there was a line waiting for the scale.  If you don't have a full truckload of one type of metal, they make you weigh in each individual metal, so there is usually a short line.  An old Toyota pulled in behind me and these three Mexican guys started unloading some stuff behind me.  They had a milk crate full of brass fittings and pieces and this was laying on top.  I asked if I could have it and offered to trade them a pile of my brass about equal weight.  Between the three of them they spoke zero English.  I had to lay a pile of brass on the floor and point to what I wanted and they finally figured out what I was asking.

I did some quick research online and it looks like it is from a Howitzer.  Sweet!  It looks like someone was using it as a ashtray as the underneath is full of tar and soot.  Anything else you guys can tell from the markings?

Well, I do know it's a 105 MM M 14 Type 1

That's all I know at the time.

Probably found it in a WWII vets cellar when they were stripping his house of all the copper while he was away.

I would guess it to be made in the mid 1940's

I have an ashtray like that. It was made by my brother in law, who was a gunners mate in the navy.

My dad had a 155mm one when I was a kid.  He was 2nd Amored Div Arty.  The movers in Germany said that they wouldn't pack and ship it.  I might or might not have a 120mm expended shell that I might or might not have found in the field on Fort Hood.

Primer design dates it between June 7th 1944 and April 18th 1946, they used that primer design exclusively during that time.

Should I run it through the glass bead cabinet and polish it or leave it as is?

155s don't use brass casings. Sure it wasn't a 105, too?

That's the base from a 105mm howitzer semi-fixed round.  It was made in 1945.

I wish I still had my 5" powder case that I got from the U.S.S. Spruance.  When I went to college my parents threw it out before I got back for Christmas.

I know a guy who has an 8" powder casing in his garage, which is neat (and large).

I'm going out on a limb here, but that doesn't look like rim fire. More than likely center fire

I have one off the USS California. Should have bought the other stuff the old guy had for what he was asking but I was stupid at the time.

I have one of those that my grandfather made into an ash tray in New Guinea in 1942. Has bent Australian coins soldered into it which are where you lay the cigarettes. It's a pretty cool piece.

I actually got mine from the quarterdeck after the aft 5" mount had fired 20 rounds.  It was still quite warm.  I was rather upset when I found out it had gotten thrown away.

The 8" case I saw came from the USS Newport News.

I have one almost the same as you posted only the cigarette holders are sides of 30-06 brass.  Got it from my uncle who was in the Pacific during WW II.  He was on the Nevada then transferred to the St. Louis after Pearl Harbor.  Finally ended up on a seaplane tender for the rest of the war.
