Ok, What's the deal with log cabin homes. Pros, Cons etc. The R factor (insulation) must be half decent as they are used in cold climates.

Just beginning to check into this. I see most are also sold in kit form. Very interesting.

How much does a fundation cost to pour these days? The basement seems a necessity.

Anyone live in or built one?

My dad is in the process of building one of the kit ones.  Nice house actually, more of a log home than a cabin.  A friend of mine owns a little excavating company and only charged him for the cement, but I can't even remember that price...  I on the other hand am trying to figure out if I want a little kit log home or if I want to start from scratch and build my own.  Good luck either way.

Oh and my guess for a foundation depending on size and what I've seen charged around my home town, between 3-7k.

Why?

Are you thinking of becoming a log cabin republican? [;)]

Funny you should ask . . . http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=140365&w=searchPop

I am building one every weekend.  We started working April, 2001.  The pics were taken last summer, so much has been done since then.  I am heating it now, so I can tell you the R-value is incredible.  My logs are 8" tall and 6" thick (others are available) and I went all-out in the roof.  Heating since mid-Dec. until last weekend has run my 500 gal. propane tank from 80% (full) down to 72%.  It is located in northern Missouri, so it has been quite cold.  This is only keeping it at 45*, but is still far better than anyone said it would be.  Also, all of my insulation isn't even in yet, particularly the top of the basement walls.  The rigid foam used in the roof is very expensive--as in $60.00 per 4X8 sheet.  Sullivan, Illinois has a place that sells seconds for $15.00 each.  It saved me a bunch as I only live 20 or so miles from there.  You can see it stacked in the pics.  It gets cut to fit between the rafters, then full sheets of 1 1/2" foil covered are put over the top, taping the joints.  VERY efficient with an R-value of 44 (R-8/inch).  Your other questions are answered in the other thread.  I absolutely cannot recommend Northeastern Log Homes and Jon Bednarski highly enough.  I am picky as hell and they have satisfied me 100% in every way.  Everything went together nicely and they thought of everything.  I have a ways to go, but it is coming along well.  Oh, my basement is three poured 10" walls with a walk-out and 16' wing walls.  It cost $9547.00.  It is absolutely a necessity, as a crawl space was going to cost almost six grand.  If I can answer any more specific questions, feel free to contact me.  I love talking about it as it has dominated my life for nearly two years now.  [:D]

Edited to add:  My wife and I got the basement toilet set last weekend, so no more pooping in the woods.  Yippeeee!!  [bounce]
