2 miles from a rental of mine. All the workers are standing around being counted.

It's just a burn off from the pictures you took?  They could have lost power and are doing a non-emergency burn off or are doing some sort of safety drill.

Of course security will ask you to leave, you're taking pictures of a refining facility....

I can get way closer from the main road if I wanted. It was that I was on Tesoro gas station property. No biggie.

Everyone is in the far corner just hanging out. I rarely see the flame and smoke from in town, that's why I stopped by.

Could be a number of things but I wouldn't worry about it

Flaring can be routine but when it's a flare that rarely burns, its often a sign something is wrong. At least that's what all my neighbors who work at refineries say.

I've worked in refineries for 37 yrs, from entry level hourly to mid-level mgmt.

As long as it is coming from the flare stacks, it shouldn't be a problem for the public/neighbors.  Worry when you see uncontained fires &/or explosions.

They could have lost any one of several utilities (steam, plant air or instrument air, cooling water, electricity, etc.), causing a partial or total shutdown of the process units.

What's the name of the oil company refinery?

Didn't know Tesoro had a refinery in SLC.  Must be a sulfuric alkylation process and not HF alkylation...

Regardless, if it's coming out the flare, you're probably ok.

I can say that my first hand experience from working at a refinery that everything is going to be OK. What your seeing is a refinery's way of relieving pressure where something upstream had an upset. Frozen pipeline, pump failure, compressor failure, etc...

This.  The flare is functioning as intended - it's a way to vent excess combustibles safely.   It's a plant upset, but not one that affects safety.  That flare was put there just for this purpose.  It's getting everyones attention, they may even shut down portions of the plant to address the issue, but it really is indeed not something to be concerned about.

If you see flames elsewhere however, be sure to let somebody know.

Yeah. I'd be hauling me some ass away from that right now
