[ARCHIVED THREAD] - LimeWire bombed...which P2P program? (Page 1 of 2)

I tried today to search for some mp3s using LimeWire, and now all I get is about 5 results, each with about 100 or so duplicates, for completely unrelated ad shit. Anyone else experiencing the same problem? Damn, it seems like every couple of years, I have to switch P2P file sharing programs. First is was Napster, then Imesh, then Morpheus, Kazaa, LimeWire, etc etc etc So which should one use? |
Nonsense - ar15.com should be a place where we can share advice on how to be better thieves. ![]() On a related topic - can anyone give me advice on how to steal some salami from the grocery store? Should I try to hide it in my coat and sneak out quietly, or should I slide it down the front of my pants and strut out proudly? |
Thats not a good analogy. To compare your analogy to something, one would have to ask about how to steal CD's from Walmart. Not even close to this situation.
|
I guess I didn't realize there were different levels of stealing. I always just thought it was wrong to take something that didn't belong to me. PLus, my analogy involves the image of me stuffing a salami down my pants, which has to get some credit |
Yeah, I recommend the large trench coat and baggy pants method. Make some small talk with the butcher. Then, out of no-where, point and yell, "What the hell is that!" When he turns around, grab the salami and shove it down your pants. Then run out of the store while he's still trying to see what you pointed at. Don't yank the salami until you're well clear of the store. Also, its best to tuck your pants into your shoes, cause that will prevent your salami from falling out. I know I sure hate it when my salami falls out of my pants. |
Put it in the power washer box, DUH

| Mabey he wants to download the songs for Metallicas "Ride the Lightning" that he bought 10 years ago on CD and has scratched so badly that he can no longer listen to it. Why insinuate that he was doing something illegal. That is a better question. Mabey his CD drive broke and he wants the song in his HD... I can think of a number of LEGAL reasons. |
Do you think recording a song off the radio with a tapedeck is equally wrong? |
What gets me is how many of these bands that complain about this now would have, back in their "garage days", done the same thing and mocked the bands that complained. Saying it was about the art not the money.
|
Good stuff!! |
Great CD, which I do own! And seriously, talk about guilty until proven innocent. |
Actually the proper analogy would be how to make a copy of the copyrighted CD cover art, without actually taking anything from the store. |
The equally part is a tricky question, IMO. Recording a song off broadcast radio and then only listening to it yourself - I guess that case somehow seems a little less severe, but I think it would still be a copyright violation, and technically illegal. Recording a song and then making it available to other people, yes absolutely. In the case of mp3's however, it seems a very different thing. Someone is taking a CD, and then copying it and making it available for others. Downloading that is very different from hearing a song on the radio - which is being broadcast over the airwaves. Like I said above, stealing is generally stealing, regarless of degree - but I think the radio/tapedeck is an interesting special case, because record companies are basically allowing radio stations to beam it into your house. |

I don't think "stealing" is the right word. Stealing implies the loss of use of a product. If you steal a CD (or a salami) the store loses the ability to sell it and the store is out the cost of procuring the CD or salami. Obviously copying a song does not deprive anyone of the song itself. It could be argued that it is a lost sale opportunity, but it is still not a good analogy. I am not saying that copyright infringement is ok - because it is not. I have a pretty strong background in intellectual property and while I feel that laws like the DMCA are unfair to consumers and the motion picture and recording industries have fueled the fires of piracy, copyright infringement is a crime and is morally wrong. |
You might be able to get away with that if you were Italian. Maybe you can carve a hidden compartment in a pair of wooden shoes? |
I think I may be the first to say it... but I don't have an excuse for downloading music off the internet. I don't blame the music industry, the artists, or businesses that sell music. I'm not starving for music, being forced to steal so my poor family can listen. But hey, if downloading stolen intellectual property off the internet is wrong... then I don't wanna be right! |
Where does that leave us on grabbing some of those pesky signals being transmitted from a satellite? Sometimes folks grab those and watch movies... Not argueing for or against, just throwing something else in the mix here ... |
I believe recording stuff off the air for personal use is an established fair use. Now if you redistributed it or sold it, that would be different. |
|
I tend to look at downloading music as a who gives a shit approach. If I hear a song that I like I will go look for it. I may find one or two other songs that I like from that same band. Will I ever buy a CD with 12-15 other songs on it that I do not like? Doubtful. They are not loosing anything from me because I will not buy their 20 dollar cd for 1 or 2 songs. Now, if a band has a CD where I like the majority of the songs on it. Then yes, I will support the band and buy the CD. It is just rare that I find any band that I am willing to shell out the money for their entire album for just 1 song. Just my 2 cents |
You dont have a salami in your pants from the big guy upstairs? |
Here is a much better analogy A man writes a bestseller. You could pay money to buy his book, you could check it out at the library for free, but your neighbor owns a copy. Your neighbor has just finished reading his copy and you ask to borrow it. According to the RIAA you have just committed theft. You used "intellectual property" for your own enjoyment without paying for it. Books are a perfect example of how crazy the position of the RIAA is. Authors do just fine as a profession, and if Stephen King can make millions while ALL of his books are passed around from person to person, then bands should be able to as well. |
The RIAA says no. Replacements are readily available for a generous $18 apiece. |
You should be jailed for being a criminal. After all, you own a gun therefore you must be a criminal correct? |
|
mIRC is nice. I use bittorent a lot. both take a bit more effort to find what you want... but are more secure. Most of the stuff I download is music and video. all unlicensed and legal from Japan. The music almost never gets licensed so it's the only way I can get it. The video usually gets licensed after a year or so. Some takes 5 or more years. Once it gets licensed I buy it. |
My excuse is that there is no other good way to find new bands and music. The stuff I listen to is simply not played on the radio, ever. When I find stuff I like, I buy it. I guess I could do it like people did back in the old days, and have copyright-infringing 3rd hand mix tapes instead, but I like this way better. |
Tell that to the RIAA who is going after Sirius and XM for their portable devices that can record the satelite signal. |
|
If your buddy buys a CD, and copies it for you, is that as "stealing" as limewire? If you rent a CD from the library, and burn it to your hard drive, is that as "stealing" as limewire? If you use a capture program to record a stream and save the files in .mp3 format, is that as "stealing" as limewire? What if you listen to music on demand channels? They give you the song you want, anytime you want, although you never actually own the file or possess it. In this sense, you have stolen nothing but still enjoy the material at will never contributing to the artist. Stealing? Something to ponder, for the absolutists. I personally still buy CD's, but many times download a single song when a: I can't find it anywhere else, b: it's out of print, c: I don't like the rest of the album or d: I despise the politics of a band I like and won't contribute to their wealth. I rationalize this small theft in the following way: I am not getting CD quality music, artwork, a package or something tangible. I'm only getting a lesser-quality file of a given song. Is it wrong? Dunno, but I sleep just fine. |
Actually, instead of your neighbor loaning you the book, your neighbor copies the book and produces another copy of it to you for free and anyone else who likes a copy. Then everyone who recieves a copy of the book from your neighbor or yourself makes a copy and distributes that to anyone who wants a copy and so on and so on. Lending your neighbor a book is not stealing, but potentially making thousands of copies and giving them away is theft. |
How so? The only tangible thing being passed on is the paper and ink the book is printed on. These would have been purchased by the person making the copy. The labor required to photocopy/retype is done by the person making the copy. They aren't selling the books, so there is no competition with the author. Who is being stolen from, and what is being stolen? The CD's that get burned are bought and paid for. So is the machine storing the MP3 itself. So is the Ipod you use to play the songs if you aren't burning CD's. Provided there is no resale going on, what is being stolen, and from who? |
|
Now what about weirdos like me that download obscure punk bands that either put their music out for free or are long dead of some overdose? Napster was awesome for this stuff before it got shutdown by Metallica and Garth Brooks whining. "But each member of the band needs their own private jet." BTW, I use the newsgroups. easynews.com is a good one, no viruses or weirdness yet. |
Are you using Pro or just Limewire? LIMEWIRE PRO works fine for $19.99, tho I am sure the price is higher buy now. (sic) |
That happend to me alot, then a friend told me just to search for LimeWire PRO on LimeWire's own search, and it works about a million times better, IMO make sure you get one thats 14.something version |
