I just bought a 2001 silverado 2500 HD and when I start the truck the head lights automatically comes on and can't be shut off unless the truck is shut off.
The day time running lights don't come on at all and I already changed the bulbs and checked the fuse but not the relay.

Their is a new wire harness for a plow installed also.

Any advice on what to check, could the plow harness have something to do with it?

Check the emergency brake if it is not completely disengaged the lights go of in most gm vehicles.

Just checked, not it. I also just checked without the key in the ignition the switch will turn on the parking lights then the head lights like it supposed to.

They unhooked the DRLs when they put the plow harness in as the lights would reflect back into the cab. Check the relay, maybe they just yanked that.

This is what I am thinking. If you would not have mentioned the plow harness when I would say a relay is bad or someone clipped a wire to get rid of the DRL's.

Look in the door jamb and see if your truck was made in CANADA. If it is your sol as they have different programming in the BCM that makes it a non selectable during the night time. But there is a way to bypass it by clipping come wires and adding some resistors.

If your truck is not a CANADA built truck then try this.

Start the truck and after a few seconds hold the headlight switch to the left O position for a few seconds then move it to the parking light position. It should shut off the lights. You can try the same thing with the parking brake slightly depressed.

I read about the trick with the dome override button, pushing it four times makes the headlights go off but you have to do that every time you start the car.

The plow harness was hooked up but they didn't have a plow to hook up yet, he was setting it up as a plow truck but when he saw the prices on the plow and sander he decided to sell the truck.

I still have to look around to see if they're any disconnected or cut wires, is this model of truck made to do this with the headlights?

A lot of American cars are made in Canada, it doesn't mean they come with DRL. Ford still doesn't equip a lot of their cars with DRL standard. GM has DRL for almost every car. Usually there is a fuse that controls just the DRL in the interior of the car. My 2009 Cobalt has a fuse for the DRL. Pulling it disables the DRL.

Have you tried removing the plow harness from the truck?

Is your truck a canada built truck?

You can go into the ECM and clip some wires to disable the auto headlight feature and make it a complete manual operation.

the DRL's only work when the truck is in drive and the light sensor on the dash sees enough daylight so that the  headlights are not turned on. need more info pm me.
it does not matter where it was built the only thing that matters is what country it was built to be sold in. gm trucks since 96 havve all had DRL's if sold in the usa 3500's and under

Open the electrical center cover under the hood.
Using the relays/fuses diagram, locate the DRL relay. .

Verify the fault is present.

Does the system operate normally?
Go to Testing for Electrical Intermittents in Wiring Systems
Go to Step 3 no

3
Block the drive wheels.
Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
Place the gear selection in the DRIVE position.
Ensure the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position.
Ensure the parking brake is released.
Ensure the ambient light sensor is not covered or has no obstruction to daylight.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15 yes
Go to Step 4 no

4
Test the DRL supply voltage circuit for high resistance, an open, or a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15 yes
Go to Step 5 no

5
Remove the DRL relay.
Connect a fused jumper wire between the battery positive voltage circuit and the DRL supply voltage circuit on the switch side of the relay connector.
Do the DRL illuminate?
Go to Step 6 yes
Go to Step 8 no

6
Remove the fused jumper wire.
Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit and the DRL relay control circuit of the DRL relay.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
With the scan tool, command the DRL relay on.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
Go to Step 10 yes
Go to Step 7 no

7
Test the DRL relay control circuit between the engine wiring harness junction block and the body control module (BCM) for high resistance or an open. Refer Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15 yes
Go to Step 11 no

8
Test the ground circuit of the lamp(s) for high resistance or an open.

Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15 yes
Go to Step 9 no

9
Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the lamp(s). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15 yes
