My camera came with the 18-55mm "kit lens" and I use it a lot as a general purpose lens. However it isn't very fast and a lot of my pics are under exposed.

What do the arfcom photographers suggest as a replacement.

My camera is a Pentax K110D.

In before the scrape it and buy a Nikon / Canon crew.

look at the Sigma or Tamron lenses with the Pentax mount.  I think there is an 18-70mm in an f2.8 available.   Or you could spend less money and get a good tripod or mono pod so you can have the longer exposures so that your shots are exposed correctly.

I shoot a Pentax K20d and sometimes use an old manual 50mm f2 lense (yes I realize this is equvilent to a 70mm lense on a digital body with an APS-C sensor).

Where's that eject photo?  Bail now before expensive glass.

Too slow is obvious but how's the focal length?  Are you always shooting wide, always shooting zoomed all the way in, or a mix of both?

Mix of both..I have a tripod and have used it and I have an old 55mm f2.8 manual focus lens that I use but a lot of my photography is on the fly. In other words..most times I don't have the time to set up a tripod. Wildlife, pics from a moving vehicle...to lazy..

So do you think you'd be happy with a lens the same focal length but f/2.8 such as a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8?  Or would you be happier with something longer like a Tokina 50-135 f/2.8?

A Tamron 17-50 f2.8 would be perfect.. I plan on getting a 70-200mm f2.8 next year and I have a 50-200mm now..

here's a review of the Tamron.  http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=308&sort=7&cat=43&page=1  It seems to rate higher than similar lenses.

I saw something recently about Sigma releasing their new 17-70 f/2.8-4 for the Pentax.  Not as fast on the long end but more reach and will have image stabilization/vibration reduction.

if you haven't visited, http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/ is a good place for info on your choice of hardware.

How about raise the ISO one step???

Bet you won't be able to notice any "noise".

i had a sigma 70-200 2.8 that was super fast.  it didnt play well with my 50d when i upgraded so i had to sell it.  i would imagine any of their EX HSM lenses would do well.  but i would try it out any lens before buying to make sure it will be a good combo
