What part is swollen?  If it's the joint behind the big toe, it could be gout.

I get it in the ankle more, but the big toe is most common.

Could be edema as a result of something like diet. You might have some food injury you're unaware of. My guess is that its probably the result of blood pooling in the lower extremities because of the nature of venous return.

freaky too. cos i had pitting edema... ended up getting new boots and some water tablets from the doc to get the swelling down

Actually, yes. New shoes as of last weekend. On my feet 8 hours a day.
