It says that it sent the item to printer w/o errors but the printer never does anything. Printer works fine for every other computer in the house. Printer also works on laptop if directly connected.

Why can't it remotely print when it appears all is ok?

I'd check the network.

What OS?

You got vista running on any of them?

yes and of course I didn't add that part the first time. The laptop is the only Vista machine. Again it does print when directly connected to printer. And now it does show that the print is "Ready".

Good call WW. There are some problems with printer and other sharing with Vista. One of the things you have to do is have the workgroup names match exactly. Then there are one or two other things I have already forgotten.

Theres something else you can try. Delete the printer from the laptop and add it back, but not as a network printer. You actually add it as a local printer. I know it sounds weird.

Let me see if I can find the exact directions. I have only had to do it a couple of times, but usually works.

reboot the other computer. Ours does that from time to time. Not sure why, but it does. Rebooting the desktop attached to the printer fixes it.

this system here has the printer on it and it gets rebooted every day.

I'll try some of the other ideas.

Try this:

Delete the printer from the vista machine first.

Make note of the computer name that has the printer attached and printer
name. Then;

" Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the
drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the
\\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the
printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty"

It will then want you to install the printer driver. There is a button for "Have Disk", or Windows Update", that is if you cant find it listed.

I have Vista on two wireless laptops and the printer on a W2K desktop.

I keep the desktop shortcut ready.  If I want to use the printer from one of the laptops, I have to log into the desktop.

It's not something that has to be done every time I need something printed.

I have to this if the desktop or laptop has been rebooted.
