I have a Toshiba Satellite, It is WiFi ready and is one of the only laptops with a Geforce card for gaming, they cost a few $ bucks more but there isnt a better laptop available. The harmon/kardon sounds pretty good with the subwoofer.

We're got a couple dozen Dell's at work and get first class service from them.

I disagree.  I recently setup 40 Dell laptops.  One had a bad HD but I had the replacement the next day.  Over the past few years, I've worked with IBM, HP, DELL, Gateway etc.  It all comes down to preference of the user or of the person setting the machines up. [:D]

I suggest buying an older used Laptop for about 1/4th - 1/5th the price of new ones.  Unless you really need all that power on a laptop.

I bought my laptop as a primary comp..

It was one of the cheapest aviable at the time ie.. low end not many preentaled features...

there is not a single thing I have ever wanted to do that I have not been able to .. from watching dvds.. to riping cd to copying a movie from my camcorder and burning a dvd < external of course>

wait there is one thing I couldnt do....  play that " medal of honor game"  but not really into gaming.. so i dont care.. < damn just sunk in that I spent 39.99 on a game I never played [:(]>

I dont see were you can really make a bad choice...  just make sure to get the largest hard drive aviable...

I got an 8200. I ordered the fastest, largest mofo I could find. It works pretty well too.

I have a Rocky that I use to run a 3-D profiler on a Laser Screed but it retails for about $12,000.00

I use a Sony Vaio for personal use.

The Sony is my fifth laptop, best one so far.

I have a Dell and have no complaints but have seen others with features I liked better. I can't speak for their durability though.  My Dell has been dropped more times than I care to admit.  Airports are hell on laptops.

My wife's Dell was DOA...They wanted to FIX IT!  She said send me a new one...

Well, She loves her new Toshiba.

I have an HP...It's been in the shop 3x in 18 months.

Whatever you buy get an extended warantee.

Make sure it has an nVidia graphics card with dedicated RAM...

Avoid 'shared' or 'unified' memory video cards (ATI, S3/SonicBlue, Intel, Savage, Trident) like the PLAGUE!!!

I have worked with a lot of laptops I would rate them:

1. IBM
2. Dell
3. Toshiba
4. Sony
5. Compaq/HP

Sharp would be below all of those brands but still good. IMO Dell has the best customer service… mainly because everybody else is so bad.

Ya dude don't get a Dell!

I used to like them until they turned on me.  I believe the entire Latitude C600/610/C800 series notebooks have inherent motherboard problems.  I've seen many that act funny and just crap out.
