| I have been thinking about looking into getting LASIK done for the last year or so but I still have some concerns about complications and long term effects. What say the hive? Thoughts, opinions, experience? |

Worth every penny to me too. Some halos at night at first but they went away. Vision is a strong 20/20 in left eye and weak 20/20 in right eye. I was wearing coke bottles for glasses before.
I was worried after some of the horror stories I read online also. I checked up on my doctor and saw that she had an outstanding reputation and following and just decided to go for it. Patrick |
| I've been putting it off for a few years now. I just read something the other day that said the long term effects are not really known. Like anything there will be those who have complications. I spoke to my eye doctor recently and he said that the lasers keep improving and that the cornea is now treated in many layers rather than just one as in years past. Technology is always improving and the more time that goes by the more the long term effects will be know. I'm going to wait a little longer I guess. |

LASIK is good. Like others have posted, your mileage varies depending on your own "biology," how bad your prescription was pre-surgery, how thorough your doc is and, perhaps most importantly: the balance of your personality relative to your expectations.
Overtly retentive people don't fair as well, if only because they expect unyelding, never-changing "perfection." The general population does pretty well, however as a rule. Just bear in mind that ocular dryness is often the major side-effect and it can vary greatly based on the above. Typically, people either ignore it or use OTC lubricants for comfort as needed. Yes, halos are a part of it (just like glasses) but they diminish in time with the healing process and also via sensory adaptation: like a bad smell in an apartment complex - you stop noticing it after a while.
Overall, I think LASIK is a good procedure and perfectly legitimate; but remember that it IS a business: get 2-3 "consults" and then trust your gut on who's looking out for your best interest. Lastly, think about your age-group - 50 yr olds won't get the same mileage out of LASIK that a 25 year old would. Best of luck! ETA: the main difference between LASIK and PRK is how they "prep" to apply the laser procedure. PRK involves stripping away of the front surface (LASIK makes a flap, and reattaches that surface for faster healing and more immediate comfort). PRK is typically more uncomfortable for several days - but may be necessary for those with large prescriptions. Overall, they're two ways of skinning the same cat.

| The reason im looking into it is because the field of work im getting into wearing glasses could be a liability. My main concern is it effecting my night vision, the dryness, reports that the flap never fully heals and just general vision complications (double vision, etc...) |

Why take a chance??? Stick with glasses...they work.
I wish I had. is worth risking your vision for. I'm 3 years post op lasik, and my eyes feel the same as if I had just had it. Raw, dry, blurry and sensitive to light. Not to mention I'm essentially night blind now. And yes, I'm fucking STILL in glasses because of blurred vision in the left eye. 60 percent HOA in the left eye, and 50 percent in the right. Pre op I was single digits. So a shout out goes to Dr. Jason Greenberg @ LasikPlus... fuck you! |

I did it about 6 years ago.It was great in the beginining. They will/should tell you that it is a trade off. When they correct it, it will affect you whne you get older.I was nearsighted. Now I can't focus close up and need reading glasses. It a combo of both age and the surgery.

This question comes up weekly. Like anywhere, you're going to get stories about how great it is (like me, 20/20 and 20/15 right/left, no night vision problems) and horror stories from others. It was worth every penny to me. Me too, I could not be happier with mine. Do it. |
