I think a problem is the actual steel on the blade.  IT's stainless steel.  Good Stainless Steel doesn't make for very good edges.  If you want razor sharp blades then I recommend a good knife blade made specifically from "Tool Steel".  It's not too corrosion resistant, and these knives are often expensive, but are able to shave VERY well.  Each knife has its purpose.

Your SS Knife did what it was intended to do.  It was intended to serve you reliably, and effectively for a long time, with reasonable sharpness, and adequate corrosion resistance considering the varying environments encountered in the Corps, Guard, and LE Duty.  Granted it is EXTREMELY difficult to get it razor sharp unless you have a laser sharpener of some sort, but it still can get quite sharp.  ESPECIALLY with lockable knife sharpeners where you get a perfectly consistent blade angle.  It has served you well so far.

What kind of sharpener do you use?  If you're not using a lockable sharpener you're in the "stone-age" pun intended.  Try it with a good locked angle stone set.  If that doesn't work, it's kind of a lost cause as far as razor sharpness is concerned, but it will function very effectively for long-term edge retention.
