I was wondering who here knows much about khat? I don't have any Skinnies nearby to ask, so I turn to the hive-mind.

From what I've been able to get on the net, it gives the chewer a real rush of energy, somewhere between drinking a case of Red Bulls and doing a line of Coke. Can anyone with experience comment?

Also, I understand it's illegal, but authorities kind of look the other way on it. Do anyone with large Somali communities know if that's true, or do the cops crack down on it?

What chewing tobacco is to cigarettes, khat is to marijuana.

If watching the various Border Patrol shows on Netflix is truly reality, they're confiscating tons of khat coming into JFK's mail/package terminal every month and they take it seriously.

I disagree.  It was more of a mild amphetamine rush--sort of felt social/animated like cocaine without the grandiosity.  Call it a toot of cocaine  and a gin-and-tonic.  It seems to heighten mental focus as well.

ETA:  I chewed the leaves once in Egypt, and the bark/stems a couple different times in Kenya.  If you're looking for some, ask a Somali taxi driver.  They'd know.

I was told by the locals that long-term usage is a seriously bad idea, as it is addicting and apparently makes you crazy.

ETA2:  As I recall, the Muslims call it Khat, the Kenyans called it (phonetic) Meer-ahhh.  I think it was spelled Miraa.

Brockmire. He mentioned chewing it, I vaguely remembered Skinnies chewing it, and my curiosity was piqued.

Dealt with that shit in Somalia.  We would randomly check bundles for weapons when it got shipped in.

People that were using it would chew it all day.  From my understanding, it took about all day before you really got any effect from it.  It's a lot like the S. Americans and chewing coca leaves.  They do it all day long and it grinds their teeth away.

People chew betel nuts for whatever reason and not only does it grind you teeth down, it stains them dark as well.

It's almost as though the desire for intoxicants is universal human nature...
